Anna Friel hopes trans drama can help change perceptions like Brookside's lesbian kiss

Mermaids are pushing Anna Friel's new drama. I think they had some input.

What's the betting it shows just one side? No realities of surgery, no Twitter trans activists and no safeguarding rules broken. And that puberty blockers are fab?

I don’t know why anyone pays attention to actors really. They look nice and read words written by other people. They don’t have to have any thinking skills.

FloralBunting · 23/09/2018 17:39

Oh, the delightful pressure quote "Better to have a daughter than a dead son". Where have I heard that piece of manipulative bullshit before?

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 23/09/2018 17:40

When asked how he would feel if his 16-year-old daughter decided they were trans, Scanlan said: “There’s a great line in the show when Vicky says, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘It’s better to have a daughter than a dead son’, and that really resonated with me.

Wow, that really original line that we've never heard before Hmm

Sounds like the whole thing will be straight out of the mermaids book of stunning and brave clichés!

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 23/09/2018 17:40

Ha, sorry floral - cross post!

Anlaf · 23/09/2018 17:42

Hmm

Here is her co-star:

“There’s a great line in the show when Vicky says, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘It’s better to have a daughter than a dead son’, and that really resonated with me.

I suspect this will be pretty one sided

Anlaf · 23/09/2018 17:43

CROSS POST WITH EVERYONE

Btw here is Jane Clare Jones on why the trans rights agenda is not the same as struggle for gay rights and acceptance

Grin

Lots of great minds...

HandsOffMyRights · 23/09/2018 17:45

I want to star in a new drama. About a middle aged woman who is watching society crumble to the demands of men

Shucks. It's been done.

Yeah, it's the 'great line from the show' thing. Like the dozy twat read the script and was blown away by the depth of such fresh, original thinking.

Instead of realising, like pretty much everyone who reads and contemplates beyond the grand cinematic drama moment, that dialogue like that is hackneyed propaganda. It's like these people live for the sloganizing.

To quote Some Like It Hot, "Nobody talks like that."

RaininSummer · 23/09/2018 17:46

More brainwashing for the poorly informed masses.

HandsOffMyRights · 23/09/2018 17:46

Well you don't want to be this kind of bigoted parent do you?

HandsOff, wtf? Is that real? God, these people are so brazen.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 23/09/2018 17:50

I thought it was only on MN that anyone questioned the transitioning of children? I'm sure they didn't need to produce a TV prog for the benefit of the MN echo chamber.

I agree that 'better a trans child than a dead one' is very manipulative.

HandsOffMyRights · 23/09/2018 17:54

Floral It is from a genuine parental blog that Mermaids is promoting about being a parent to a trans identifying child.

I would like a realistic episode of Orange is the New Black where a psychopathic rapist claims to be a woman and is transferred to the women's prison.
Or a drama exploring a kid who desists.
Or the difficulties of de-transition.
Or a documentary about the unknown long-term effects of cross-sex hormones, surgery or puberty blockers.

FloralBunting · 23/09/2018 18:06

HandsOff, I genuinely haven't got the emotional strength to click that link today. I've had a bitch of a day at work, one of my daughters has gone AWOL, and the repetitious accusation that I am a bully to my daughter because I don't go along with the binders/blockers abuse will probably send me into a spiral of angry sobbing and too much wine.

FermatsTheorem · 23/09/2018 18:18

Or a drama about what it's like to be a transwidow while everyone in your social circle is cheering your husband on for being "brave and stunning" and making snide little digs at being surprised you've turned out to be a bigot.

Or about a young student who thinks she might be lesbian, being guilt-tripped into a relationship with a transwoman, and subject to the full gamut of coercive control techniques while trying to persuade herself that she's okay with PIV (when she clearly isn't).

Flowers Floral Sometimes you just have to step away and be kind to yourself.

HandsOffMyRights · 23/09/2018 18:20

Floral Flowers

Probably best. I will always try to have empathy for parents dealing with tough situations, but the picture and caption is just too much.

I hope your one daughter comes home soon and that your other one listens to you soon.

It IS better to have a daughter than a dead son. It's also better to have a son with a PlayStation than a dead son, or a son with a mountain bike than a dead son. At some point you have to say No, threatening suicide isn't going to get you what you want. There's no end to what kids will demand once they are taught that suicide threats are effective.

Starkstaring · 23/09/2018 19:22

Or a drama about an undiagnosed autistic woman struggling to find her identity and the mental health issues arising from that.

carceralfeminist · 23/09/2018 19:27

Floral Flowers Much love to you and the rest of the Bunting household.

Gacapa · 23/09/2018 19:34

There’s an interview with her on Mail Online today as well. Going on about how great Mermaids is and how puberty blockers are basically life saving. The dumbest interview I’ve read for a long time. She must have needed the money or something to star in barely concealed low-rent propaganda. She’s always irritated me.

placemats · 23/09/2018 19:35

How the feckin hell in feckin hell is a lesbian kiss compared to this? Friel isn't a lesbian either. She acted that kiss at least twenty years ago. Hey Anna, things have moved on. Women can now marry each other.

This isn't comparable to Section 28. If I hear that comparison one more time.
