being photographed and posted on facebook without consent- weird website

I've come across this very weird phenomenon this week via a friend of mine who was targetted - of people taking non consensual of women eating on the tube and posting them on a website that has 35,000 members !! Very intrusive and weird that people can be encouraged to take secret photos and post them - and of women only. The group Level Up has started a petition asking Facebook to take it down (people have reported it but apparently it doesn't breach their rules)

Is this your first post on Mumsnet?

Why?

traceyracer · 07/09/2018 01:00

I thought that facebook page of women eating on the tube was years ago and was taken down. has another one emerged?

MistressDeeCee · 07/09/2018 01:14

Had a quick look on FB just now. The group is back and has 33K members. I can't see posts obvs as not a member, but the front page says there was 1 post today. 3 of the Admins are women, it seems. How can we report group without joining.. ?

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2018 02:26

It's full of handmaidens. I used to be a member of a campaign against this site, and yes that was about 5/6 years ago. The guy behind it was so creepy, as were most of his followers, that I locked down most of my social media as a result and it's still locked!

NotTerfNorCis · 07/09/2018 03:25

Well this man is up his own arse.

Burke does not understand why women would feel threatened. He admits that some women might feel uncomfortable, but thinks such a feeling is "an incredibly healthy way to be”. He adds: “Anyone who gets their knickers in a twist over that [having their photo taken on the Tube with food in hand] needs to check themselves a bit. Look, people just need to develop a sense of humour, and toughen up a bit.”

actualpuffins · 07/09/2018 03:35

If someone filmed me without my consent, I'd film them filming me and post it on social media. Let it get back to their friends, family, employers etc and let's see who finds it creepy or acceptable.

dangerrabbit · 07/09/2018 03:49

In the article not terf posted above, ironically the man who set this group up refused to be photographed for the telegraph article (and the telegraph unfortunately didn’t just take and post a picture of him without his consent), yet he fails to acknowledge how what he is doing is intrusive to women. Funny that.

GollyGoshGreat · 07/09/2018 07:49

Maybe the female members are there to look for photos of themselves?

BarrackerBarmer · 07/09/2018 08:05

Wtf is wrong with people?
Why do this? It's just grim. And why just women as targets? And why women admins?

Aaaargh

OnlyObjectivity · 07/09/2018 08:07

You don't need someone's consent to photograph them in a public place and it's important it stays that way.

The Facebook thing is weird though - but technically doesn't constitute harassment as it isn't repeatedly doing something against an individual.

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 07/09/2018 08:12

That's obvious harassment. Another way to shame women for being human. Eating eh? Ladylike women don't need to eat, go to the toilet or shave their legs ever and they are never seen applying make up. Women have to be still, quiet, seen but not heard. Like attractive lifeless mannequins. That way they neednt worry about being made figures of fun.

Women just need to lighten up about being publicly humiliated for deviating from being a human mannequin and drawing unecessary attention to themselves.

Lichtie · 07/09/2018 08:12

Can't see the point in it, just weird. But if someone takes a photo of me eating on the subway I can't say I would particularly care.

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2018 08:18

It's not just that, it's all the comments people make on the photos. Some sexual etc.

ChattyLion · 07/09/2018 08:32

Terf thanks for that Telegraph link.

If you google Tony Burke’s name who is a ‘film director’ (he’s the perv who set up the women eating on the tube thing) it appears that he also made a short film ‘Him’ in which ’A lonely Londoner fantasises about a fellow commuter she sees every day on a tube platform.’ Hmm

In your dreams mate.

But of course this woman-hater encouraging fellow misogynists to photograph and shame women using the Tube isn't sexualised or creepy at all.. Hmm

MsBeee · 07/09/2018 09:19

Question, I just wonder if this might be a fishing exercise to get us to join the group and dox.

Don’t want to be parinoid, do we know original poster. ? If it isn’t I apologise.

Gncq · 07/09/2018 10:59

I had no idea this group was back in action. MsBee I had exactly the same thought.
I suppose being constantly paranoid for using a feminist forum is "natural and healthy" too.

TooMuchPenis · 07/09/2018 13:16

Is this your first post on Mumsnet?
Why?

Sorry where is the appropriate 'first post' thread? Also let me introduce you to the name change feature on MN Hmm

Also the reason it doesn't violate their rules @firework99 is because Fb is a pile of dicks. If you posted saying you don't think that male bodied rapists should be in a female prison this would be grounds for a good banning, but posting pics of women to abuse them is A fucking OK

TooMuchPenis · 07/09/2018 13:22

Question, I just wonder if this might be a fishing exercise to get us to join the group and dox

www.welevelup.org/who-we-are/ It's just a petition for a feminist campaign?

Gncq · 07/09/2018 13:31

Sorry, we're all just really paranoid. Rightly too.
Thanks for sharing.

MsBeee · 07/09/2018 13:35

Well yes , but where is the original poster? Hasn’t responded. You need to join the FB group to see the images. So that could be a fishing exercise, not thevperiyion .

Dunno 🤷‍♀️ just be careful out there folks.
Again if I’m wrong apologies

MsBeee · 07/09/2018 13:36

Oh sorry typo should say petition

AngelsSins · 07/09/2018 13:50

Why are men such sad, bullying, sex obsessed, little idiots? They can never just leave women alone to enjoy their lives, they’re utterly obsessed with us.

Haworthia · 07/09/2018 13:52

If this some weird fetish, or just a bunch of men getting a kick out of humiliating women for having the temerity to be hungry in public?

firework99 · 07/09/2018 20:01

Hi there - just to explain - I am a mum of teenage kids who used to post on here when they were younger but haven't done so for a while. I am a genuine poster wanting to bring this issue to as many people as possible for genuine reasons. My daughters are routinely sexually harrassed in the street and on public transport - I care about this issue for that reason - there;s quite enough shit going on already without an open invite to photograph and publicise humiliating images of women who are just trying to travel from A -B . You're right to be paranoid though - there's some funny people out there - as evidenced by the fact there are 35,000 members of that facebook group !

Firework 99
Thanks very much for posting again and I appreciate your response.

Unfortunately, people on FWR have been harassed and doxed, so Ive become quite cautious.

And as you are a woman you totally get it my caution. Yes it is vile, Im sorry to hear about your daughters, unfortunately as women this is the crap we have to put up with every day.
Looks like FB don't give a stuff about women, quell surprise.
