Yay!

So pleased. No one should have to go through abortion on public transport on the way home from the clinic.

The WEP campaign has been successful and this was announced today

Abortion pill can be taken at home in England, under new plan

This is fantastic news Smile

VickyEadie · 25/08/2018 17:03

It never made any sense at all before. Good news.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 25/08/2018 18:31

Great news thank you for sharing.

KisstheTeapot14 · 25/08/2018 18:34

Great. A long overdue step forward. Remember Ann Robinson documentary featuring a young lass who'd had a miscarriage on the bus home - this makes much more compassionate sense.

So pleased to read this too. A bit too late for me but after my own experience I would love to hear of terminations becoming easier to access. Yes, we can call a clinic or doctor and make an appt within 2 weeks but sometimes you need 3 separate appointments! This proved extremely difficult for me to manage with 2 under 3's that you obviously can't bring to any appt.

FloralBunting · 25/08/2018 19:42

I'm not pro choice at all, but I can certainly see the argument for this decision. It makes no sense at all for something to be legal for women and then the practicalities made as unpleasant as possible.
Those arguing against this from a pro-life perspective have always seemed rather vindictive to me.

Cwenthryth · 26/08/2018 07:05

ems sorry you had to go through such difficulty to access your termination. Not what you need at such a time. My understanding is that a lot of the bureaucracy is due to the fact abortion is still technically illegal in the UK, the 60s legislation was a work-around that could be got through Parliament at that time, but is hopelessly outdated now and needs revising. Hence currently we need two doctors to give us permission to access a termination. Women shouldn’t need permission to access healthcare. The other WEP campaign on abortion rights is ‘time it’s not a crime’ to challenge this as well.

I was so pleased when I read this yesterday, such a small thing that will mean so much to so many women.

rememberatime · 26/08/2018 08:03

I was concerned at some of the headlines surrounding this "women allowed to take abortion pill at home". It sounded patronising and patriarchal.

Is there any realm of life or medicine where men are allowed or not allowed to do anything relating to their own bodies?

The narrative is about women being given an allowance, not their right to arrange their medical care as they see fit.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/08/2018 09:20

That's a good point.

We've asked nicely and generously been allowed

Rather than a pointless rule that caused suffering was lifted

Cwenthryth · 26/08/2018 10:35

But we don’t have the right to arrange our own medical care as we see fit, when it comes to abortion. As it stands, we have to ask for and be given permission by 2 doctors to be permitted an abortion.

The current status around abortion on the UK is patronising and patriarchal, the headlines are reflecting that. It would be good if the MSM narrative could discuss and challenge that further though rather than just reflecting it.

The criminal aspects really need to go.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 26/08/2018 13:21

I've noticed the same, FloralBunting. I also once read an article by a woman who ran an abortion clinic in the USA. She said that sometimes they'd get a woman coming in for abortion who had been a protester outside the clinic. They always insisted their reasons for abortion were very serious, as if they assumed that all the other women had trivial ones. Which presumably they did. Shows a startling lack of empathy.

Good news about the abortion pill. Your response to the news shows your typical kindness and good sense.
