I’ve just been reading an article on The Pool about a period tracking app and came across this and, I’m just done.

I mean, is this seriously the ridiculous level of bending over backwards to avoid not be liberal enough that we’ve come to? Bloody hell.

’after 15 years of talking to other cisgender women (and other people who menstruate) about their periods, I realise it’s all very normal. That most periods, however insane, are, in a way, normal.’

The irony here being that the article is about men designing technology for women:

www.the-pool.com/health/health/2018/31/Caroline-O-Donoghue-on-Fitbit-period-health-tech-women?utm_source=saturday&utm_campaign=2c7a4996bf-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_08_03_01_45&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fa8feddc14-2c7a4996bf-69683729&mc_cid=2c7a4996bf&mc_eid=5835a513bc

I do understand that they’re likely referring to transmen here too by other people, but still.

I’ve been been thinking about this and wondering if I’m just annoyed about a non issue Confused

They could have made it a bit less annoying if they'd simply said:

’after 15 years of talking to people who menstruate about their periods...'

I'm a woman and no longer menstruate, for example (though obviously, I'd still be able to join the conversation party).

But they chose to virtue signal with the "cisgender women (and other people who menstruate)" bit.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/08/2018 19:10

No, I think it's annoying too. It's removing the word woman and replacing it with a bodily function. It's just another example of "people with a cervix" which was used to promote smear testing.

That was even worse because uptake of smear tests are lowest among those groups of women most likely not to know what a cervix is.

There are a lot of active threads on FWR at present. On another day you would have got more posts.

There is another thread on this already. Can't link to it but should be relatively easy to find with AS.

Honestly I’ve had enough. Women have periods. End of. I don’t know how much more of this pc crap I can take b4 I erupt

visitorthedog · 06/08/2018 20:14

Ah thanks @rogerallamsfangirl I’ll have a look, I must have missed it or cross posted last time.

Yes that’s exactly it, virtue signalling and replacing the word women with a body part.

I think what’s got me the most is that it’s got to the point where mainstream websites written by intelligent women for intelligent women are using this language. I just don’t get it. What about the majority of women feeling mislabelled with the cis nonsense, or do women outside of feminism boards either don’t care, or don’t get it - or agree?!

Every time I hear this it reminds me of ‘breeders.’

And now I’ve Godwinned the thread. Huzzah.

But it does. It’s dehumanising language.

visitorthedog · 08/08/2018 00:02

Yes, exactly, if only I could identify myself out of having periods. I’d be all over self ID then Grin
