Stonewall's Top Tips on submitting a response to the GRA consultation

There are top tips on how to answer seven key questions. Also, there are suggestions on how to use the consultation form to lobby for more things on the trans wish-list.

There's so much wrong with it, I don't know where to begin.

What "other things" are on the wish list? Is one of them that thing about releasing all trans prisoners immediately?

SittingAround1 · 24/07/2018 16:51

They basically advise saying 'no' to all the questions apart from the last one about non-binary recognition. So they want a third gender category as well as self-id to the opposite sex ? I'm lost.

If they get what they're asking for then anyone could just wake up one day say they're the opposite sex and use all the services for the opposite sex, without any checks whatsoever.

Everywhere will beome unisex as a result (no way am I waiting in a queue for the ladies if I can say I'm a man and use the gents) .

What does living as 'the opposite gender' even mean ?

Is there a similar place to go for more GC tips? I'm trying, but am curently floundering, trying to shoehorn in women's perspectives where trans ones have been targetted!

Fairplay for Women will have guidance.

I also think there will be quite a bit more that comes out over time.

Hi VickyE

You asked what "other things" are they urging respondents to lobby for.

Question 11: Is there anything you want to tell us...etc....

We're urging people to use this question to raise the issue that trans people aged under 18 cannot apply for a Gender Recognition Certificate......... And we want to see a recognition process for under-16s incorporating parental consent.

Although the government hasn't been persuaded about GRCs for under 18s, there's nothing to say that they won't change their minds now or in the future, after receiving a shed-load of submissions saying the same thing.

Thanks R0wan I should have thought about that!

I've set aside blocks of time over the next few weeks to make sure I do it justice Smile

Stonewall Guidance:
Question 2: If you are a trans person, please tell us what having a Gender Recognition Certificate means or would mean to you?
You only need to fill this in if you are trans or non-binary

You can use this question to explain any difficulties you have faced without a Gender Recognition Certificate, the difference that legal recognition would make to you in affirming your identity and going about your life, or to comment on anything about the current process which may have put you off applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate.

Fairplay For Women has produced a superior guide.

It's long but then it has to be. Best tackled in bite-size chunks, probably.
(In short, wherever Stonewall recommends a 'YES', FPFW recommends 'No)

Did you you notice how the Stonewall TTs described the protected characteristics, give several examples, but deliberately didn't mention 'sex'. You would have thought it was relevant!

theOtherPamAyres · 01/08/2018 10:08

it is illuminating to see which Guide - Stonewall or Fairplay's is comprehensive and backed by evidence. And it's not Stonewall's.

PamsterWheel · 01/08/2018 10:19

Right, so trans people can't have their own opinions and must be spoonfed what to say/think/feel.

Outrageous

Bingpot · 01/08/2018 10:21

I noticed that too BirthCanal.

I also noticed the sentence 'Trans voices must be front and centre.' As if they are the people this proposed reform primarily affects, rather than the half the population who just have to accept their loss of rights for the benefit of a very small minority.

The misogyny is staggering.

Wanderabout · 01/08/2018 11:01

You can save the consultation and go back I think so should be easy to do in small chunks.
