For your delectation - this is the conversation I had with the local election canvasser last week (NB: namechanged to avoid outing myself!):
Canvasser - who is a prominent local LibDem I've met before a few times and chatted with - rings the bell on the evening of voting day to check whether we've voted yet.
I told him yes, I've voted LD on account of their good local team and being anti-Brexit, but had to hold my nose rather this time on account of the national party's line on women's issues. (I am trying to work on the "changing from within" basis for now, rather than quit in protest!).
Canvasser - oh really? Tell me more...
So I got in a bit about their policies on prostitution etc (which I don't agree with at all), before moving onto the self-ID debate and that (in)famous Twitter account.
Canvasser - a somewhat older gentleman, probably not very up to speed with this stuff, looks slightly lost but agrees it's all very confusing.
Then HE says to ME, jokingly..."Well, I'm surprised some 40-year-old man hasn't yet said they identify as a 4-year-old girl so they can get put in with the kids...."
So I says, "Well, actually...."
