The Big Questions - Is masculinity in crisis?

Did anyone watch this? I found it very interesting in the disparity of views.

Some completely negating any harm done to women\ and banging on about about misandry. This isn't something I see in RL I see far more disparaging of women, and love my DS and DF very much and keep my DS aware of equality between the sexes and races and everything else. Saying this as someone who's new to this MN topic trying to understand it all. So many differing views.

Also think those MGTOW and Incels come across as seriously fucked up. Do they not have mothers/sisters/daughters who they love? Why the bitterness?

I watched this! Open mouthed.........
The guy who used to edit Loaded was unbelievable and the American professor!
I really feel that it was bitterness on their side of the panel (also why were there no women on the front row?) that made them sooo prejudiced. However I have found recently that some women in the media (think Loose Women type of programme, I’ve been poorly recently!) are behaving in the way males were in the 1970s and it is going unchallenged. Think sexual comments about men, ogling photos etc. So I can see that although women are making headway in getting someway towards more equality, (women prime ministers, more women in CEO positions)we are in danger of becoming sexist in a way we have managed to stamp out in most men.
I started work in the 80s and a lot of the graduate women really felt they could have it all but hit their mid thirties and realised that it was still a man’s world career wise as coming back from maternity leave was difficult. Biology plays a part in the balance of masculinity and feminism.
I’m not sure the topic of discussion was actually discussed as it should have been, NC lost control of the panel too often.

Ardant · 06/05/2018 12:30

So many men really, really hate women. It's not surprising they'd blame them.

Mike Buchanan is a muppet. He also vanity searches his name so

He's banned from MN because he was such a complete and utter wanker when he posted.

Masculinity in crisis?

The panel shows that are almost always filled with male, stale and pale persons suggest otherwise. As do the boards, management lists, Parliament, courts, sciences etc etc. Even in jobs that are traditionally seen as 'women's work' the faces at the top of the tree, so those earning the most from them are almost always male.

So, I'm not going to cry into my soup just yet for the men.

There was also someman (I didn't catch who) who said that he doesn't know any rapists. Which is weird, because if he can spot who is and isn't a rapist, purely on meeting and chatting to them, then he should definitely be doing something with that skill set instead of whining to women on the TV, don't you think?

Generally, women only know when a man is a rapist when they're actually being raped by them, but this dude can sense, via some ineffable force, which men are rapists!

c75kp0r · 06/05/2018 13:38

I havent watched it yet but surely the justice for men and boys title means justice for women who love men and boys? It doesnt say justice for mras. Though why other women dont get justice, I dunno....

JaiPo · 06/05/2018 13:38

Wow yes, he should be using his rapist-spotting skills to let women know before the men they trusted (or felt obliged to trust so that they weren't labelled man-hating misandrists) raped them.

SardineReturns · 06/05/2018 13:40

I assume (not having seen it) that he means he doesnt' know any convicted rapists.

I also assume that he's a total dick.

peanut2017 · 06/05/2018 13:50

It was infuriating to watch.

As mentioned no females on the front row. Denial that the patriarchy exists any more. Shouting and speaking louder than anyone who had an opposing view.

The comedian guy who said we are not all rapists and I don't know anyone who is??? Or anyone who is like Weinstein??

It's back to this bullshit of the stereotypical view of a rapist is that they must be a loner, weirdo and attack women up a dark alley. Not that they live amongst us all and have normal professionals etc look at the Belfast rugby trial. Rapists are more often than not known to the victim and are often related to them or married etc

I love the Big Questions normally but I was so anybody watching it. Blaming women essentially for not getting access to children after divorce and that this leads men to commit suicide.

Do not like the term toxin masculinity or feminism. Instead of feeling blamed they can't say yes some men behave really badly and this needs to be tackled.

Xenophile · 06/05/2018 13:52

You'd hope so wouldn't you, Sardine, but no. He knows no one who has ever raped anyone.

Agree that he is a total dick.

Ereshkigal · 06/05/2018 13:53

How the fuck does he know?

PositivelyPERF · 06/05/2018 15:16

How the fuck does he know?

Because, obviously, the rapists would have told him if they were rapists, so because the men that he knows didn’t tell him, that means they aren’t rapists. It’s so straight forward isn’t it? Now if we could just get the rapists to tell us silly women that they are rapists, then we wouldn’t be raped. We really need to ask the men we deal with, “are you going to rape me?” I’m sure they’ll be totally honest. 🤨

cistersofterfy · 06/05/2018 15:33

Just clicked on the iplayer link and started watching. Jordan seemed to be saying something very sensible; then a rude man interrupted and started speaking in a snidey, patronising tone so I switched it off.

Did I get the gist of it?

LangCleg · 06/05/2018 15:38

Bunch of hideous blokes doing a QED on the question premise. Colour me shocked!

UpstartCrow · 06/05/2018 15:43

@cistersofterfy In a nutshell, yes.

They got away with so much bullshit it was farcical. For example, they quoted the 'but women are domestic abusers too' and were never challenged about the actual, factual statistics.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 06/05/2018 22:19

I'm still surprised they let the MRAs lead so much despite the content. Always thought The Big Questions was fairly balanced hence why I watched it.

Yep Xenophile, that guy doesn't know any rapists because they don't actually announce themselves and it's not sth you talk about over a dinner party so that means you aren't one.

OP posts:
thebewilderness · 07/05/2018 00:25

According to the MRAs and random misogynists masculinity is always in crisis and has been since it was first postulated that men may not actually be god like masters of all they survey.

thebewilderness · 07/05/2018 00:31

How the fuck does he know?

No woman he knows trusts him enough to tell him.
Not since they tried to once or twice and he made a rape joke, I suspect.
