First woman in Parliament Square.

The article goes on at some length to explain the differences between the approach to gaining the vote by Millicent Fawcett and her followers (persistent but never violent) and the Pankhursts, whose methods were more spectacular, and remembered better now. There's been a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst on the Embankment for ages, but nothing for Fawcett until now.

Great news! I knew that the statue was a work in progress but didn't realise it was being unveiled today.

Really good news about this statue. Have heard the lady who pushed for it/brought it about on the radio a couple of times today, and I'm sure she said there were more men called John who had statues than women who'd been commemorated with a statue when she looked.

The more I read this forum, the more I wonder what my girls are learning about history and their own importance in society. I'm glad I'm more mindful now.

I was there to see the unveiling; it was quite emotional !

The music, poem and Millicent's speech were fabulous too - it was quite a celebration.

I'm fortunate to spend time regularly in that part of London so will undoubtedly be visiting her regularly.

It sounds amazing Dame.

Good to see Caroline Criado Perez, Theresa May and Sadiq Khan all there.

The statue itself looked great (only saw it on the link). I didn't realise that Gillian Wearing created it.

Will definitely book a break to London and go and see the new statue.

The statue is great and long overdue. Hope to pop in and see her if we get close at any point.

Fantastic news Grin

There are more statues of named animals than women in Edinburgh. Fun fact. Know your place!

I'm another fan of Dame Millicent. Also her daughter, Philippa. And Mrs Despard, as well.
