WPUK Wales meeting last week - help needed

MacaroonMama · 17/04/2018 13:21

Hi All,
As lots of you know, the Mercure Hotel were meant to host the WPUK Meeting in Wales last week, then pulled out last minute, and a primary school stepped in to host.
The primary school is now under fire from TRAs for hosting!
(I didn’t attend but saw this on a private FB group and asked if I could share.)
Details on the screenshots (all permitted by the FB OP and nothing identifying) - if anyone could send off a quick email in support, that would be much appreciated.

I'm going to email too.
It's absolutely essential that debate is allowed; whatever your view it is more abhorrent to shut one side down.
Disgusting cowardly behaviour.

Winewinewinegin · 17/04/2018 18:34

Is it worth emailing links to the MPs and articles on free speech that have come out recently some of which mention exactly this issue with WPUK. Janice Turner and mumsnet on free speech in the Times, spectator article today (and didn't someone from WPUK write a spectator piece too? Plus there was a tweet from David c Davis in support of WPUK.

Winewinewinegin · 17/04/2018 18:35

No current access to email or I would send.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 17/04/2018 19:04

I have emailed the school and will also email the local MP and councillors.
Not on.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 17/04/2018 19:11

bump.

wonder if OP should change the title

DebbieInBirmingham · 17/04/2018 19:22

I wasn't at the Cardiff meeting but I spoke at the WPUK meeting in Birmingham. This piece was developed from my speech. quillette.com/2018/03/30/plea-trans-activists-can-protect-trans-rights-without-denying-biology/ I will send a brief email in support, and include that piece.

I'm trans and I'm a teacher for what it's worth.

You wonderful lot - you are awesome, thanks so much.

The person who posted the message on the private FB group is not on Mumsnet but I have sent her the link, and I imagine she will be incredibly heartened for the support. Lots of people on the FB group have also emailed, so I really hope we can make a difference.

Thank you again everyone so much Flowers Wine Flowers Gin Flowers

Thanksforthatamazingpost is the title not trafficky enough, maybe? I was running out of time while toddler napped! And also wasn’t there so the details are not mine, iyswim? Do let me know your thoughts and I could ask MNHQ to change xx

I hope the Chair points out that the last place wpuk met was in the house of commons. Its also worth mentioning that Kiri Trunks, the current head of the uk's largest teaching union, the National Education Union, was a founding member of wpuk.

OvaHere · 17/04/2018 20:49

The HoC meeting was a different group. It was WNTT headed by Venice Allen.

Not meaning to nitpick but it's probably important to be super factual in this situation.

neolara and Ruth Serwotka is a lifelong trade unionist and generally fabulous woman. I know Ruth well and I would say she is one of the most committed equalitarians I have met.

MrsWooster · 17/04/2018 22:39

Emailed support to Sue Lent and C Skinner. Hopefully this latest will show yet more lurkers and people as yet unaware of the TRA tactics and agenda just how low they will go. More exposure = more incredulity about the TRAs.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 18/04/2018 00:43

What is the deadline for this?

Am currently knackered at this point in time; but wish to add my support to the school and to the person who sorted the new venue, said person and venue now being given grief.

Serious Respect to them.

I was there. Must write to them, to point out their role in standing up for women's rights and the safeguarding of children.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 18/04/2018 13:04

Macaroon - something like "Primary School Governor risks being sacked for arranging WPUK venue - please help"
(if that's accurate)
HQ would probably be willing to edit.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 18/04/2018 13:04

I think you would have to report your own thread first iyswim

R0wantrees · 18/04/2018 13:17

Has this request also being added to the bottom of the previous one about Cardiff WPUK? Many of the people who attended would have commented so adding there as well may help.

MsBeaujangles · 18/04/2018 13:22

The school's Equalities Statement does not include sex as one of the protected characteristics. The have also, spuriously, added gender to the list - which isn't a protected characteristic. Maybe this is why they have problem with the meeting? They may have also been failing to take appropriate action to protect children from discrimination as a result of their sex, due to their apparent lack of understanding of the Equality Act.

The governors need to be educated on the Equality Act and to make sure that their policies reflect the law!

Janie143 · 18/04/2018 13:39

Maybe they use gender in their equality policy because sex is too rude for a primary school Highlights the whole issue with word policing

Kalikan · 18/04/2018 13:46

May also be worth contacting Cllr Dan De'Ath - he's a Labour councillor for the Plasnewydd ward (pretty certain that's the ward the school's in) - I know he knows some people who attended the meeting quite well...

GeminiRising · 18/04/2018 13:53

Emailed to C Skinner and Sue Lent to offer my support.

invisibleoldwoman · 18/04/2018 15:55

Email sent.

TittyGolightly · 18/04/2018 15:59

Worth bringing to the local AM’s attention, along with any other appropriate AMs. (I wouldn’t bother with Leanne Wood Wink)
