Why has R Kelly got away with so much? When will he be stopped?

www.theguardian.com/music/2018/mar/28/r-kelly-accused-of-grooming-14-year-old-girl-as-sex-pet-kitti-jones-bbc-documentary

I am so sick of this! Every few months we hear the same stories about this guy. These stories have been around for 20 fucking years!

From the article:

*"The R&B singer R Kelly has been accused of sexually abusing a girl since she was 14 years old.

The allegation – the latest in a string of allegations of the sexual abuse of young women by Kelly – was made, referring to another woman, by former girlfriend Kitti Jones, in a BBC3 documentary, R Kelly: Sex, Girls and Videotapes.

During two years of dating Kelly from 2011 onwards, Jones, 34, says she was groomed by him, and forced to have sex with him and others at least 10 times in a “sex dungeon”."*

The list of people he has collaborated with since the trial featuring the video of (allegedly) him with a 14 year old girl is quite astonishing. I thought I'd misremembered about Lady Gaga working with him, but she did, which amazes me. She was very famous then, and I'm sure didn't need to do it.

The Ben Zand documentary was very disturbing. It does seem that no one much at all cares for young poor black girls and women.

yep the plain sight thing was so disturbing I'm glad BBC 1 aired that primetime, not much often to say good about BBC1 but good for them.

In plain sight. Just like Savile. Just like so many others. All men in power.

At times I find myself wondering how many other men would become similar abusers if they too had such power.

Agree it’s horrific. Haven't see the doc yet, will watch. This Buzzfeed article from last summer makes a chilling read.

Did anyone see the leak of the Do what you want video? It was never released, but what came out was so disturbing I wondered if Gaga was even well at the time. I was pretty gobsmacked she had collaborated with him and even more so when I saw the clips.

BastardGingerCat · 04/04/2018 23:16

Why the hell are people even wanting to be associated with a known pedophile and sexual abuser? I can unfortunately understand lack of witnesses if he's paying them them off but are they not horrified of what he's done and ashamed to be seen with him?

Lampage · 04/04/2018 23:31

I don't know about Lady Gaga working with R Kelly or the clips (would be interested to see though) but look at how many huge names worked with Weinstein and stayed loyal and very silent even after the initial public accusations.

These men are so untouchable that everyone becomes complicit. It takes huge steps to take them down, and it rarely happens.

The accusers are nearly always portrayed as being unhinged women, whereas the men need a break at the sex-detox clinic.

I can't understand in the documentary women cheering at his concert knowing what hes accused off and a woman said she would work with him because he is successful.

Woman are his cheerleaders too.

staydazzling · 06/04/2018 00:16

totally agree octave the point one of the protesters made about R Kelly/ Weinstein was very valid too.

terfing · 06/04/2018 21:03

Speaking of which, I haven't heard from Weinstein in a while... is he going to court or not?

Last I heard, the NYPD were "ready to press charges". That was a few weeks ago though

Good news! The tide is turning on this monster. On Twitter, several high-profile people (such as Viola Davis!) have shared the tag #muterkelly along with the #timesup hashtag. It seems that people are finally starting to question him!

It's not much, but it's a start! Let's hope this leads to something! Smile

we must remember this is because of us, social media is very useful sometimes its comes from our pressure it wouldnt have come from them but small yay!

terfing · 02/05/2018 14:17

Emma Watson has tweeted!

I'm so glad this is happening. It did seem that the Weinstein affair only cared about the rich white women who were abused. Men and People of colour were ignored, as R Kelly shows.

its good but im cynical that it turns to vanity tweeting like metoo did .

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/05/2018 19:00

It will make an impact if the people that collaborate with him and work with him actually "mute" him and choose to collaborate/work with other people. Perhaps if finally he becomes toxic then people with actual power over his career will be put off.
