Sick of being made to feel like shit by men

I like to game. My username paints me as obviously female though I didn't really think about it when I chose it. I'm so sick of either getting sleezy messages, friend requests from guys that then just try and chat me up or fucking horrible misogyny. Tonight I had a message asking me if i own a rape alarm! What the fuck!

I hear ya! I used my own name for about three weeks when I first went on the interwebs in the 90s. I have been using the name of my house ever since.

I had considered changing my bio to "I am a big hairy man" and see if that weeds out some of the creeps but then I get annoyed because I shouldn't have to should I? They just shouldn't be creepy fuckers because it's not ok!

Not a film, it's part of Rooster Teeth, maybe you have heard of them. There are a few female gamers who co present The Know and they are pretty influential in the gaming world. Have a look on YouTube 🙂

This shit was one of the reasons why I stopped playing WoW, moving servers to one where no one knew who I was didn't help either. Apparently some men get very upset when a woman is consistently better than they are...

I play something else now, but have an androgynous name and have a variety of sexes of toons. Shouldn't have to, but at least I don't get PMs asking me to perform oral sex on male characters now.

A while back (when I still read the rag) I changed my username on the Guardian to one that makes me sound male. It’s amazing how the insults, mansplaining and blatant sexism reduced overnight.

Peanut- I'm fairly new so my KD ratio is pretty shit. That also makes me feel worse as I have "friends" on there and it pretty much cements that even the ones that are now my friends didn't add me originally because I'm a good player.
Butterfly- without missing a beat i said fight, so I guess that's my answer. Last night was just 2 weirdos in a few hours which is a new record for me. Rape whistle weirdo went on to tell me I want worship for being a girl gamer and that I'm an attention seeker. He'd taken the time to click on and look up my profile and read my bio of his own free will but apparently I'm an attention seeker....
Xeno- that is utter shit. I can understand why you got fed up. I find as well that when you give them a mouthful for their shockingly inappropriate behaviour they try to make you out to be the rude one.

I’ve done some FutureLearncourses (online MOOCs delivered by top universities for free)

As part of the course delivery, online discussion boards are used.

There’s often great discussion: there’s also often some weirdo who follows my username with passive aggressive/ attention seeking mansplaining comments.

Ditto with having any online/social media presence, there are lots of unbalanced weirdos who seek to take over the space and make women afraid to participated
