I'm not sure if I can link to twitter properly but I'll give it a go. I noticed this on another twitter feed about the Scottish consultation, but I'm wondering if this is the beginning of a brave new world.

They have asked for a separation of LGB and T

Anyone on twitter might be able to follow it through and see the exact decision making process.

There isn't much information on the actual decision process.

Mogleflop · 26/02/2018 18:13

Wow, good for those LGB students!

sexnotgender · 26/02/2018 18:25

Definitely good for the LGB students.
One of the trans students has said on twitter they have the most right to be under the LGB umbrella, so deluded...

newtlover · 26/02/2018 18:30

excellent, so pleased to see this, and in the convo it mentions that many transactivists are homophobic, which is one of the reasons I am suspicious of them

newtlover · 26/02/2018 18:32

actually if they would only start their OWN campaigns, maybe they could then start asking for their OWN toilets, swiming sessions, refuges, etc (rather than trying to invade ours) and then I would support them

Clarissalarissa · 26/02/2018 18:43

This thread is confusing. But last August the Student Union passed a motion that LGBT should be changed to LGBTQ+, and that in addition to the current LGBT officer, there should also be a T only officer . So at that juncture at least they added to the emphasis on / power of T students.

Trailedanderror · 26/02/2018 18:46

Excellent. I find the rebranding of Gay Pride as 'Pride' quite sad and symptomatic of the steamrolling mememe of the trans movement.

Dynamitewithalaserbeam · 26/02/2018 19:12

I was trying to rootle through it all Clarissa, and I got the impression that they were looking for a separate Trans officer, not because they were pro-trans, but because they felt that they needed to have separate LGB and T officers (plural).

I bet there was a transwoman taking over, becoming the LGBT officer and shitting on everyone else from a height. So rather than try to change him/her, they are trying to separate them, which is a good way to go I think.

They must have some very strong personalities on that committee; ones who are prepared to stand up for gay and lesbian people.

Ereshkigal · 26/02/2018 19:46

I think they will feel that people give them more consideration when they are attached to LGB. That their demands are harder to dismiss.

newtlover · 26/02/2018 22:51

Absolutely! and this is where so many of us came in, a few years back, from a history of solidarity with LGB folk and thinking, yeah, gender diversity, we approve of that, men in dresses, no problem, let a thousand flowers bloom...and then, turns out, not cool after all. My problem now is bringing all those (IRL) who HAVEN'T spent the last few years hanging our here up to speed.
To summarise, well done those students for finally asserting their boundaries, hopefully others will follow.

letsgetserious · 26/02/2018 23:02

I live near there and almost studied there too. So glad they are at the vanguard. I thought it was going to say they were fighting to eradicate women as a category. Universities so rarely are on "our" side, this is enormously positive. Thank you OP for posting this!

ButteredScone · 26/02/2018 23:29

Wow, go Heriot Watt.

That’s a big deal and they must have had amazingly strong personalities and debate to get to that point. Kind of restores some faith in students as thinkers, really.

velourvoyageur · 27/02/2018 02:55

Excellent! May it spread!

Yes, thanks for posting.

Definitely agree with this.
Also think that a lot of card-carrying TRA-allies secretly don't really buy into the ideology, but don't even want to admit this to themselves, as they want to 'live and let live', 'be kind' etc, and suspect that once they start questioning, they won't be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube, won't be able to stem the doubt...doesn't take a lot to destabilise that kind of 'loyalty' once you start emphasising that sex has its unique significance, that it's ok to recognise this and not essentialist or banal or irrelevant. The stats to counter self-ID claims are there, the arguments are there, they're simple, it's just a case of letting them have a platform.
