Well bugger me. An Indy article that reports women's concerns! Only a bit mind, but the tone suggests we should actually be allowed an opinion.

Progress?

Melamin · 16/02/2018 13:10

It is a bit lacking. The comments certainly are.

BitFuckedOffNow · 16/02/2018 13:13

Can the row over Labour’s all-women shortlists really be responsible for a six-point drop among female voters? It seems extraordinary that one issue – and an issue that has not received much attention beyond social media – would cause such a slump in the polls.

Misses the point a little IMO , and focusing so closely on AWS obfuscates the issue, which is the wider implications of self-ID, particularly women's safety and right to privacy.

Elendon · 16/02/2018 13:20

Wow! Women should be allowed an opinion, how gracious of them to desist from no debate.

It reminds me of a card I once saw in a bookshop decades ago that went as follows:

'And for your birthday my dear, I will give you an orgasm'

Imagine Victorian gentleman standing by the fireplace and talking down to dear wife who gratefully sits below.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 16/02/2018 13:21

Oh sure, but ime the Indy editorial line on these matters up until now can be summed up as 'evil transphobic bigots are responsible for the deaths of trans people and we need to re-educate them'

Elendon · 16/02/2018 13:25

Also I'm aghast that Jess Phillips is repeatedly called a Tory by Labour supporters.

Everyonematters · 16/02/2018 13:31

I think the widening of the editorial line on the discussion in the indie is the cheering thing about this article.

Excellent to have more mainstream coverage, specifically referencing Mumsnet too, which shows the influence us contributing to these boards is having.
It makes me optimistic that if political parties see self-ID is really an issue that will cross a good deal of ordinary female voters, I think they will be more likely to shelve it.
Not all trans people favour self-ID either. If it appears too controversial and too difficult to legislate properly, with protections and case by case examination in the many areas which even people like Gaby Hinsliffe admit cause problems (as in sex offenders in women's prisons) then it's very encouraging.
I thought the comments looked pretty positive. Interesting one from a transwoman asking to be left out of lobbying for self-ID on their behalf. Like the one too about "piss-off women at your peril"Grin
One about the "alt-left" eating itself tooHmm Underlines even more how important it is to show this issue is concerning women across the board, regardless of political allegiance and it's not all just an identity politics fight-fest.

Jess Phillips is great, has a feminist book out which I am thinking of buying (kindle only so far I think but hard copy coming). Haven't read it yet but suspect anyone in labour who doesn't like her has a problem with genuinely supporting women (by which I mean biological women) in succeeding in politics and in life.

Agree it's great to start seeing the issue in the mainstream press. My only concern though is I hope it doesn't become a story about the Labour party. Another reason why I'm not comfortable with all the noise JJ has been making here...

LittleLebowski · 16/02/2018 13:56

Yeah you're right - I think we can expect an Owen Jones pushback article soon in The Guardian (no comments allowed) along the lines of "Labour are right; transrights ARE women's rights and here's why" Expecting him to mention 'transphobic bile" in the first paragraph.

DodoPatrol · 16/02/2018 14:06

Someone tell LiketheNight to come over here and join Mumsnet. I think they'd enjoy it.

Violetparis · 16/02/2018 14:13

Have just asked on another thread what Jess Phillip's view is on self ID . Has she actually said she is against it ? I do admire her so I am hoping she understands our concerns.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 16/02/2018 14:50

So far she has refused to commit herself. At one point she said she thought the Womens Place demands were 'reasonable' and called for 'more light, less heat' in the debate but then she got dogpiled and Labour went all hardline and she seems to have rowed back.

More recently transactivists were trying to bully her into saying 'transwomen are women' but she didn't respond.

Make of that what you will ...

Violetparis · 16/02/2018 15:02

Thanks Tallulah, on another thread it was said that politicians are sitting on the fence on self ID at the moment. Jess Philips is not usually one to keep quiet on things she feels strongly about, hopefully she will be reading Mumsnet and realising she would have a lot of support if she were to speak out against self ID.

Everyonematters · 16/02/2018 15:12

I think we need to keep telling other voters who don't get it, and get them to write to and go and see their MPs.

OP posts:
TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 16/02/2018 15:13

I'd guess there are a lot more gender critical mps than are willing to come out and say so just now. I'm hoping if we can get a debate going from the ground up that will give the whole issue enough legitimacy to start up a similar debate among policy-makers.

Violetparis · 16/02/2018 15:49

I also said on the other thread that the mainstream media is starting to pick up this issue. I can see self ID increasingly become a 'gotcha' political question in interviews, with politicians having to come off the fence or visibly squirm their way through their answers.

LittleLebowski · 17/02/2018 08:55

So it's fake news then according to Jennifer James? An article mentioning #labourlosingwomen and Mumsnet that also points to a possible groundswell against self-ID isn't true? So many people responded to the 'Labour bouncing back' thread with doubts about Labour, but it's fake news. I don't get how this approach helps with raising mainstream awareness that this issue is important to so many women.

Someone posted this on Twitter earlier. It's not clear if the man in question is a TIM, but even if he isn't, it's still a fucking good reason to keep men out of female spaces.
