Not surprising but depressing all the same.

Yes there was a link to it on my Facebook too
I am challenging this through the Scottish government consultation but
I feel a letter to my MSP/ MP coming on as well

That really wasn't worth reading. Was she paid actual money for writing it?

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 30/01/2018 14:05

She’s just regurgitating dodgy stats and spurious claims from a Pink News press release.

Equality Network’s 2017 Hate Crime report found that 80 per cent of trans people have been the victim of a hate crime, including verbal abuse, physical attacks and sexual assaults. For many, receiving abuse is a regular day-to-day occurrence. It can’t be right that, in the 21st century, many trans people can’t walk down the street, get through their working day or go out with their friends without facing some form of prejudice
Fucked if I know how selfID and a fast-tracked route to a new birth certificate is going to change that.

And for the record, she's right that it is bloody appalling that people are treated like this. Including women.

BlindYeo · 30/01/2018 14:14

These politicians really need to understand the difference between day to day tolerance for individuals and making a change to the law that will have massive inadvertent negative consequences for women's rights and protections. Why is this so hard to understand?

Do you want to give any convicted male sex offender the right to self-ID his way into a women's prison, Mhairi?? If not, you cannot support self-ID!

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 30/01/2018 14:14

She doesn’t give a shit about women, though. You don’t get virtue cookies for caring about women.

Also disappointing that she’s bought into the ‘media war against trans peoole’ myth. Publications are beginning to rightly question the all pervasive trans ideology and its implications for women and children. That is not a media war.

Idiot.

HerFemaleness · 30/01/2018 14:17

Good to know that women's desire for continued legal recognition as a sex class is an 'unnecessary barrier''.

Stopmakingsense · 30/01/2018 14:21

verbal abuse, physical attacks and sexual assaults

This is what happens to many, many people who don't conform to our society's very narrow view of what is acceptable. There are lots of cruel and ignorant bullies out there who aren't bothered what or how someone identifies as, so self ID isn't going to make any difference at all to that.

GetDownDog · 30/01/2018 14:28

I bet most women in political positions will go down this route though, there's a very good chance their careers will be curtailed if they go against the grain.
It's very similar to actors speaking out to praise Roman Polanski and Woody Allen, because doing otherwise will shut down their career.
Sadly going against the grain right now is the way of logic and science, and we are on our way to madness.

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 30/01/2018 16:21

Yes, I think they will, it's still a bit unforgivable though - how unprincipled must you be to back something that someone as bright as Mhairi must KNOW will shaft women?

OP posts:
BarrackerBarmer · 30/01/2018 17:01

This has now been brewing for enough years that NO POLITICIAN can any longer pretend that they haven't heard a gender critical argument outlining the impact to women of this. I'm past the point of thinking "oh, they just don't really understand" and well into, nope, they get it and they are just genuinely awful people.

I have the tiniest sliver of tolerance left for any politician who gets it and wants to speak out but dares not.

And zero tolerance for any politician who has heard, comprehended, and rejected fairness to women in favour of being popular. And I think that most politicians have had the chance to think about this stuff now. Hell, they have an obligation to listen and consider.

Mhairi Black is a lesbian, no? She gets it. I'm ashamed of her.

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 30/01/2018 17:13

Yes, there's no way any politician can credibly feign ignorance of the gender critical argument.

So either they're so far down the road and have drunk so fully of the Kool Aid they genuinely cannot see the wood for the trees as they're so conditioned to kneejerk and screech 'transphobia and bigotry!' at the sensible, well reasoned, intelligent debate being presented by feminists. Or they get it and are too afraid to speak up. Which is fucking despicable. Women and children are at risk here, and these out of touch self serving wankers refuse to say a word.

I have just googled 'hate crime':
The police and Crown Prosecution Service have agreed a common definition of hate incidents.
They say something is a hate incident if the victim or anyone else think it was motivated by hostility or prejudice based on one of the following things: disability, race, religion, transgender identity, sexual orientation.
Why is sex not in that list? Women are often abused, attacked, cat called due to the fact they are female - so why aren't they 'hate crimes'?

AngryAttackKittens · 30/01/2018 18:06

These publications need to take a long hard look at themselves – they are part of the problem.

Is she seriously trying to peer pressure The Times into shutting up? Oh, Mhairi, you're smart but you're still awfully young.

Ereshkigal · 30/01/2018 18:34

I guess because the justice system wouldn't be able to cope with the volume! Very telling though, isn't it?

shehimthey · 30/01/2018 18:42

Fucking fantastic. I like Mhairi Black but this is just trans flag-waving.

LangCleg · 30/01/2018 18:46

I have the tiniest sliver of tolerance left for any politician who gets it and wants to speak out but dares not.

I'm rapidly approaching the same point.

Floisme · 30/01/2018 18:54

I actually think we may be overestimating their knowledge. In my (admittedly very limited) experience of MPs I found that most of them knew the square root of fuck all. About anything, unless they were on a select committee (if that's still what they call them). I remember being quite shocked as I had assumed they'd be really clued up.

And in this particular case, I can imagine them imagine them actively wanting to avoid learning anything more for fear of damaging either their careers (Black, Creasy, Phillips) or their legacy (Harman).

It doesn't make me inclined to hold them in any regard whatsoever.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 30/01/2018 19:27

I wrote to Mhairi Black about the trans issue last year, in some detail, with particular emphasis on the homophobic nature of the TRA agenda.

She is not my MP and I know she isn't obligated to reply but I am sure she is not ignorant of this.

(My own MP didn't reply either despite numerous letters).

Gacapa · 30/01/2018 20:48

If she got it, but was just fearful of speaking out, then she wouldn't write pieces like this in the press.

Nope. Not buying it. My personal opinion is that I don't like the SNP and this doesn't surprise me at all.

This article is incredibly lazy and sounds like something an assistant has rattled off by cutting and pasting and Black has just signed it off. Because she doesn't care. Yeah, she should be ashamed.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/01/2018 20:55

On a tangent, I think violence against women as a hate crime is being trialed in nottingham

BarrackerBarmer · 30/01/2018 21:01

I'm sorry to admit that I kinda wish each of the virtue signallers the full conclusion of their stated wishes.

May all their sexual invitations be exclusively from women with penises.
May all their gender balanced committees comprise exclusively betesticled people.
May all their women's health providers have swinging dicks.
May all their speeches be interrupted with worthier baritoned uberwomen
May they henceforth be immersed, entirely, and without exception in the company of only one kind of woman; the adam's-appled, 5 oclock-shadowed, prostate-endowed newwoman until they reach final saturation point and cry Uncle.

Let them have what they claim they so badly want until they are desperate to finally tell the truth, the lying, obfuscating, gaslighting, morally bankrupt twits.

If they claim the distinction shouldn't be made between women and men who want to be women, let it be so.

Mrsmiguelcervantes · 31/01/2018 06:39

I wish the same for them Barracker, it’s what they deserve. They are absolute traitors to their own sex.

Yes Barracker!
