Mark Steel writing in the Independent about the Presidents Club. Cutting and hilarious.

I love:

This makes it a strange and magical evening in which the women should have known all along what sort of things would happen, while the men doing the things that were happening had no idea any of these things were happening.

honeysucklejasmine · 26/01/2018 09:13

Eugh. Never read the comments.

AngryAttackKittens · 26/01/2018 09:15

Is he always this sharp and funny?

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 26/01/2018 10:13

honeysucklejasmine I’ve had to stop reading the comments for the sake of my mental health

I know it's a whole list of different people commenting, but the simultaneous: 'Those women knew it would happen! What did they expect? Not that it did happen! And women do it too!'... all smacks of desperation.

HairyBallTheorem · 26/01/2018 11:52

'That’s why the response to this story that goes “What do women expect?” makes sense, because men can’t help it. So often you sit down for dinner and out comes the penis onto the table without you even seeing it. They’re attracted by roast potatoes.'

Comic genius! 'They're attracted by roast potatoes.'

Anniegetyourgun · 26/01/2018 13:04

I only read the first screenful of comments and actually I thought they were rather good, nicely ironic. I did not read the "awaiting moderation" ones. I probably got away just in time before the dinosaurs invaded.

Rosielily · 26/01/2018 15:01

Saving to read later. Thank you!

hackmum · 26/01/2018 15:46

"This makes it a strange and magical evening in which the women should have known all along what sort of things would happen, while the men doing the things that were happening had no idea any of these things were happening."

This is exactly what I've been thinking about it - good to see it expressed so nicely.

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 26/01/2018 15:50

Excellent article. I never read comments as I am not a jerk whisperer.

Mamaka · 26/01/2018 16:00

The last paragraph is bloody brilliant!

ohfortuna · 26/01/2018 16:06

Is he always this sharp and funny?
I think he is yes :o

IfNot · 26/01/2018 16:08

One property executive who insisted, “The women know what they are doing” added, “There is free champagne – they can have a drink.”
It’s the same at a wedding. When someone hands you a free glass of champagne, you know what’s coming, so you apologise if your boxer shorts aren’t the same colour as your shirt as the host pulls your trousers down, then sip your drink and know you’ve struck a fine bargain."

Haha! Excellent!

SusanWalker · 26/01/2018 16:33

I love Mark Steel.

If you think those comments are bad you should see yahoo's. The ones today under the article about early man leaving Africa earlier than first thought were horrendous.

Just goes to show that no matter what it will always be the woman's fault. So depressing.

StealthPolarBear · 26/01/2018 16:37

Yes and how there was no one there by twenty past eight :D

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/01/2018 17:21

^"Is he always this sharp and funny?"
Yes he is! (Luffs Mars Steel.)

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/01/2018 17:25

Like it

Though we are having a roast on sunday and the thought of me not spotting the penis on the table has quite spolied my appetite for roast potatoes

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 26/01/2018 18:11

I have actual tears in my eyes from laughing.

Spot on of how ridiculous the lengths misogynistic gits will go to excuse their/others disgusting behaviour.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 26/01/2018 19:50

That was a great article really funny and cutting, I liked the first below the line comment

"We all have choices but we don't all get to choose from the same menu."

I feel like a lot of the people who are being so disparaging about the young women have never been in the postion where your choices are limited and so don't understand.

I've never read any of Mark Steel's other articles but I'll have to look them up.

newtlover · 26/01/2018 19:51

very funny, but the comments Shock
I guess they just didn't understand what he was saying, poor dears
