Really enjoyed this article

"there may be no single greater inconsistency than the dual love liberals have for both paid sex and the notion of “enthusiastic consent.”"

All the more poignant after hearing someone called Heather on the radio talking about the court case where former prostitutes are asking for their "criminal" records to be sealed/expunged.
Some of them are put off applying for jobs because they feel being asked to discuss their conviction is asking them to discuss the fact they were raped and abused as children.

Some are being barred from working in many jobs because their "crime" is categorised as a sexual offence.

Yes, I just read about that high court case on Posie's twitter feed. Good luck to them - it is shocking that they are being treated this way.

And agree hundred percent - if some sad apology for a man is paying, it is not freely given consent.

yes, i heard that woman on the radio this morning, she was brilliant I thought. Very interesting that the interviewer asked her about the term 'sex work' and said that it's often preferred these days. I thought her answer was great, 'It's prostitution. It's not sex, and it's not work' which just sums it up so well. She was on the Today programme if anyone wants to listen.

I think people often have this idea of prostitutes as being like high class call girls rather than desperate women numb inside, often with drug habits, massive debts to the sort of men who think nothing of breaking legs or worse and a sense of being worthlessness.

I worked with some and they hated the men they had sex with more than they hated the social workers who took their kids, the police who arrested them, the dealers and loan sharks. I think that says it all really.

Pimps and traffickers invented the term sex worker to conflate the perps with the victims so they could claim to speak for prostituted women in public when trying to legalize the rape torture and abuse of women in the sex industry.

I completely agree, I just cannot understand how people can simultaneously understand rape culture, power dynamics, coercion and the need for enthusiastic consent - but then think prostitution is just fine.

It's a wilful blindness I think - if you call it sex work and pretend prostitution is no different than once spending a few weeks taking your top off in front of a webcam then you don't actually have to do the hard work of facing the reality of what you're promoting with sex positive feminism.
