No-one is forced to back anyone. Last time I looked we didn't live in a dictatorship. Protecting your reputation, making ill-considered choices and then realising they weren't the best, using government positions to support your family/mates and getting caught in the middle....none of that equals being forced.

A good news day. Delighted.

ALunerExplorer · 09/01/2018 11:49

Don't know who made this, but sums things up nicely:

Toby Young

What's a reverse ferret?

Agerbilatemycardigan · 09/01/2018 12:09

Someone that in the old days would'very been described as a turncoat

If you use google, this should be the result at the top of your screen:

Reverse ferret is a phrase used predominantly within the British media to describe a sudden reversal in an organisation's editorial line on a certain issue. Generally, this will involve no acknowledgement of the previous position.

Snowdrop18 · 09/01/2018 12:42

I don't know how some of what Young has said doesn't count as hate speech.

titchy · 09/01/2018 12:52

Yep Jo Johnson gone.

guardianfree · 09/01/2018 12:55

Excellent news. From the day he got a place at Oxbridge without the grades (after his famous father's intervention) he has lived a life of privileged access to power and state money without needing to display any of the basic morals that those who work in education are meant to promote.
Now serious questions need to be asked about his role with the New Schools Network - which I believe provides him with a generous personal income at the state's expense.

Terrylene · 09/01/2018 13:02

Well Jo Johnson has shown himself very publicly as the thick-witted oaf, most sane people already know he is. He's probably feeling a bit sore.

No - he's not been too bad as Universities Secretary actually. He was forced to back TY yesterday - what choice did he have. He isn't a thick-witted oaf like his brother at all, although I doubt he'll last till then end of the day.

The labour MP who came up against him (JJ) in the commons (expecting JG) said that he was a friend of brother BJ and this made it difficult to question knowing this. (I think she was on Today with the 'reverse ferret' chap).

Interestingly, the Guardian, who deleted my factual and inoffensive comment about that Paris Lees Vice article promoting street harassment, have let stand the one where I called Toby Young a bellend of the highest order. It’s good that their ‘community standards’ are so well thought through and consistently enforced Grin

OlennasWimple · 09/01/2018 14:44

Bear in mind that the government still contains Michael Gove (friend of TY) and Baroness Evans (Lords Leader, former COO of the New Schools Network)

guardianfree · 09/01/2018 14:45

EverlastingSummer
I posted a comment under that article asking why there were so many deletions and suggesting that it contrasted sadly with the paper's honourable history of campaigning and exposing matters to scrutiny. It wasn't just deleted but even my name disappeared (and it was definitely there - I'd already had one view posted ).
They really are determined to socially engineer their view of the future aren't they?

EverlastingSummer · 09/01/2018 14:50

Yeah, but on the plus side, no TY.

And this hokey-cokey appointment has brought his bellend-ery to the attention of many people who’d hitherto had the good fortune never to have heard of him.

EverlastingSummer · 09/01/2018 16:24

I’ve had the total deletion before, guardianfree, and was really confused, thinking I’d not posted a comment at all, until DP reminded me I’d shown him before it disappeared.

I can’t understand WTAF is going on at the Guardian, it’s all totally out of character. In my darker moments, I wonder if they’ve been hijacked by some illiberal entity in an effort to undermine the left. Or maybe they’re just chasing the clicks of well-meaning but uncritical-of-thinking millennials. Who knows?

Terrylene · 09/01/2018 21:00

Jo Johnson has been moved from Universities.
