I see Toby Young has been given a job he has no experience of and is totally unsuitable for.... which reminds me of someone...

Jobs for the boys

The best quote ever from the DfE

“He will provide vital insight in ensuring universities are working for young people from all backgrounds.”

Nearly snorted my kitkat when I read that

Battleax · 02/01/2018 07:32

I wish somebody would explain to me how that man gets away with it Hmm

QuentinSummers · 02/01/2018 07:45

Just been reading this on Twitter and Westminstenders thread. I am horrified, for lots of reasons.
They didn't even interview a candidate with bags of experience

I can't see how he meets the job spec. At all

He believes in large scale IVF and embryo screening for "progressive eugenics" e.g. only implanting embryos with genes for intelligence. Which shows he's totally lacking intelligence in how IVF/genes/intelligence actually works

quadrant.org.au/magazine/2015/09/fall-meritocracy/

In that article he uses "men" throughout- women are totally invisible.

In 2013 he was incredible sexist about a female MP on Twitter
politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/toby-young-cleavage-tweet.jpg

I'm properly angry about this and the state of our government. The fact they have made this appointment shows the utter contempt they hold us in. Ideology above country. Angry

It's much more than "jobs for the boys"boys"

Meeep · 02/01/2018 07:49

He is disablist. Everyone should be offended and outraged about this.

GuardianLions · 02/01/2018 07:56

Toby Young had a key role in the antifeminists movement of the 1990s - ie lots of privileged, educated males wistfully yearning for the freedom from respecting women as equals 'just like' their imagined 'working-class man' enjoyed. They then led a massive media-based offensive against women and girls.

I still feel he/they have women and girls blood on their hands.

cuirderussie · 02/01/2018 08:28

He is a vile creep. It's always seemed like his whole "career" is a giant infantile shitting over his father's legacy.

The DfE are not known for their 'due diligence' in making appointments or funding things. It is they who have actively funded and promoted Mermaids, GIREs etc. I suspect it's more of the 'who you know' rather than any appropriate 'meeting the criteria' for the actual job.

ALunerExplorer · 02/01/2018 10:38

Toby Young, who thinks that putting wheelchair ramps in schools is 'political correctness gone mad', and referred to working class Oxford students as 'stains'.

Oh, and his MP daddy got him into Oxford even though TY didn't qualify.

The man is barely qualified to clean a toilet. He probably doesn't even know how to do that. Or would think that suggesting he do it is 'pc gone mad'.

Just another reason to want this government gone.

Tinycitrus · 02/01/2018 10:54

I read ‘How to lose friends and alienate people’ In which he details his cocaine use. Nice.

At one point he is struck by the fact that he does not know anyone at Vanity Fair and this is a revelation for him - previously he would be able to rely on a network of allies to help smooth his way and offer him opportunities for career advancement.

SarahCarer · 02/01/2018 11:07

That Quadrant article is horrifying. It starts out with the usual self serving analysis of the elite that seems to think you can test IQ independently of social conditioning and then suddenly he's talking about screening working class embryos!

Childrenofthestones · 02/01/2018 12:06

Well if it makes you feel any better.....

"Theresa May considers reshuffle promotions for seven female ministers in bid to improve Cabinet gender balance"

Brilliant article by Janice Turner in the Times today about Toby Young.

She pulls no punches - get a coffee and enjoy Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/01/2018 09:59

Theresa May has just said, on Andrew Marr, that when he was appointed she had no idea about his utterings on social media but that now he is a governmental official "if he continues he will no longer be a government official"

Reading between those lines, and the look on her face, he is on thin ice!
