Best book to read about feminism?

16 year old DD is obsessed after her new psychology teacher has been teaching about it/talking about her campaigns.

She'd like to learn more and figured a book would be best. I have no idea what to buy.

The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power, and the Future of the World

It’s a real page turner. I managed to read it in a week as it was so compelling and I’m a sleep deprived mum of a baby. At 16, it would probably be even quicker.

It basically sets out the recent history of women’s rights and the connected political movements of the last 50 years. It also tells the story of how in cultures all over the world women are controlled because of our potential to bear children. Although the book doesn’t spell it out it became clear to me while reading it that at the heart of feminism is a woman’s right to be in control of her own biology. It shows how a myriad of other seemingly unconnected social problems are solved by letting women have control over their lives.

The author is a journalist not an academic so it’s quite punchily written without rambling, difficult to understand academic sections.

The Politics of Breastfeeding is probably not for her now but is AMAZING. Made me so angry. Showed me a way of being a feminist and a mother. Gabriella somebody, sorry can't remember surname, you could google?

I was recently a 16 year old getting into feminism and passed on any great books on to my little sister.

Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti is hands-down the best intro to feminism, campaigns, and the movement that I've read and it's an enjoyable and colloquially written read.

Reclaiming the F Word by Catherine Redfern and Kristin Aune is also really good and I studied it as part of my degree in a module on feminist politics - it especially looks at contemporary feminist movements and across the globe.

Half the sky is good if you're looking at development issues.

I'd also highly recommend anything by Audre Lorde or bell hooks.
