Anyone been watching the football?

Apologies if there's been a thread in Chat or somewhere. I don't usually watch sports but watching the England women is so refreshing. Not just that they keep winning, it's like being in a world where women are just... people.

DeleteOrDecay · 27/07/2017 21:55

*i've

DramaAlpaca · 27/07/2017 21:58

I've just watched the England v Portugal match & really enjoyed it.

The Women's Rugby World Cup is next month too.

tigerdriverII · 27/07/2017 21:58

Yep, and same with the cricket last week.

PuffinsSitOnMuffins · 27/07/2017 22:02

It's very cheering. Now I need to check when the England v France match is. Poor old Scotland though...

Yes - I did start a thread at the beginning of the Euros, but got very few takers Sad. Glad to see a livelier thread Grin. Yup, watched tonight with my DDad. Sad to see Scotland go out (I am a Scot, though so fairly inured to football disappointment), though really chuffed we went out with a win. And the cricket was awesome - and they sold out Lords!

You're so spot on with the "seeing women being just people". That's one of many reasons I love women's sport. (I used to play women's football back when I still had functioning knees, and dabbled a little bit in cricket).

moutonfou · 27/07/2017 22:33

I'm trying to watch it but for me the appeal of big football competitions isn't the football itself; it's the buzz there is everywhere and the enjoyment of everybody watching it and following it and talking about it, which is kind of missing.

There seems to be a vicious circle in which very few people watch it because very few other people are watching it... which is a shame.

whoputthecatout · 27/07/2017 22:50

How refreshing tonight on Sky to hear a woman (Tammy Beaumont} player of the series in the Cricket World Cup commenting on the men's T20 Blast between Somerset and Kent and being treated by the male commentators just the same as any male player.

And I must praise the Daily Telegraph sports section too. They treat women's sport seriously, stick up for it and heavily criticise the dinosaur attitude of the old fogeys. Even Lords has decided to do a World Cup Honours board and put Anya Shrubsole's name up on it for taking more than 5 wickets in an innings. Formerly it was only men and only Test Cricket where that happened. Perhaps the fact that Lords sold out for the women's world cup final (26,500 spectators) has made the old fogeys think a bit. Though I suppose there will still be some grumbling into their beards.

Things are definitely looking up at last.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 28/07/2017 09:29

Well thats Scotland out. Its nice to see Scotland reach a major finals again and miss out on the next round by one goal again. Its like 1996.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 28/07/2017 09:33

I don't really follow Cricket but I was nice to see Lords sold out for England winning the World cup.

Collidascope · 28/07/2017 09:42

Yes, I watched all 3 games. So nice to watch an England team that actually wins. Does anyone know if goal sizes are changed to factor in women generally being smaller? I looked into it and couldn't see that they were, but that seemed so odd that I couldn't quite believe they wouldn't be.

Orangetoffee · 28/07/2017 09:45

I was on Hedgehog's thread an I have been watching most matches, especially the Holland games.
What is refreshing is the no nonsense approach, players go down and get up again without all the amateur dramatics. There was a clash of heads during Ned-Bel and both players returned with bandages.

Did anyone see the documentary about the FA banning womens football?

Collidascope · 28/07/2017 09:48

Yes, I noticed that, Orange. No rolling about after a tackle, crowding round the referee when something doesn't go their way, or general squaring up to each other and sniping.
And they say women are the emotional, histrionic ones.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 28/07/2017 09:52

I didn't notice hedgehogs thread where is it ?. Sadly I've not seen any of the games as I've been at work. I'm not even sure what channels its on TBH. I had been hoping it was on the BBC so I could watch it on Iplayer.

DeleteOrDecay · 28/07/2017 10:01

I've not seen the documentary but have heard the stories re: women's football being banned. The long and short of it is that basically men couldn't cope with the fact that women were better and more popular than them at something so they banned it. The whole 'football is a mans game' is nonsense and always has been.

Where can I watch the documentary does anyone know?

Orangetoffee · 28/07/2017 10:22

You can still watch it on channel 4 catch up. It is called 'when football banned women' with Claire Balding

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/07/2017 10:24

It was on Channel 4, here's the link:

www.channel4.com/programmes/when-football-banned-women

The Euro matches are also on Channel 4, or More 4, also on Eurosport I think. You can probably watch them on the Channel 4 catch up service.

Notreallyarsed · 28/07/2017 10:28

I'm Scottish so obviously gutted, however heartened by the fact that the football is being mentioned in the MSM without the usual "oh it's just "girls"" implications.

DeleteOrDecay · 28/07/2017 11:12

Thank you Orange I might give it a watch tonight.

DeleteOrDecay · 28/07/2017 11:13

And thanks Assasinated for the link.

Orangetoffee · 29/07/2017 18:51

Semi Finalists Football Grin.

Hup Holland!

PuffinsSitOnMuffins · 29/07/2017 20:30

Well, this is all a bit soggy. The state of that pitch!

Orangetoffee · 29/07/2017 20:46

What about the dugouts!

They should postpone until tomorrow

Orangetoffee · 29/07/2017 20:56

Right decision, tomorrow 11am.

Orangetoffee · 30/07/2017 13:00

That was a surprise result but Denmark deserved the win, they were the better team in the second half.
