Thought posters here might like to see this heartening story of a 15 year old girl who's started a campaign to provide sanitary products to homeless people in her area. I think it's excellent, as is that she's received over £1,000 more than her target in donations already. What a great girl.

Thanks Amy

dangermouseisace · 15/03/2017 11:41

that's such a brilliant idea.

I actually had a homeless person quietly ask me if I had any spare tampons etc. I went and bought her a box. That must have been a humiliating thing for her to have to do.

Notafish · 15/03/2017 13:41

Thanks Amy.

Brilliant idea - and what a fabulous thing for a 15 year old to be leading.

IAmAmy · 15/03/2017 16:05

You're welcome Helen and Notafish.

It is a brilliant idea and I think it's lovely a 15 year old thought of this upon seeing homeless women on her way to school. Such a fantastic girl seeing women in such situations and thinking of how she could help them in some way. An article on it from her local news site is here: www.cornwalllive.com/teen-bimini-love-is-buying-tampons-and-pads-for-homeless-women-in-truro-with-your-help/story-30188183-detail/story.html

That is a fabulous idea. Thanks for posting Amy.

Can I also just ask people to add a couple of packs of tampons/pads to any foodbank donations they make as well?

IAmAmy · 15/03/2017 16:25

You're welcome Xenophile and that's a great idea. It's very easy for me to do that as my closest supermarket has a foodbank donation point so I will. Hope her campaign spreads the word around the country!

I mainly donate tampons to my food bank (rather than, e.g., food) - they often tweet that they're running short.

Xenophile · 15/03/2017 17:38

You stars!

I've not needed help from a foodbank, but I have lived in the kind of poverty that means that you have to choose between spending the last of your money on the electricity meter and hope that the food you have in will last or getting some sanitary protection and possibly having no heating or light. So, while I can't speak for all those women, my 15 year ago self thanks you.

jellyfrizz · 15/03/2017 17:45

Great idea - well done that girl! I'm ashamed to say that it is something I have never considered.

paddypants13 · 15/03/2017 18:31

Did you see the news article yesterday about teenage girls from poorer families avoiding school when they have their period? They often can't afford sanitary products. Sad

But of course our government considers them a luxury item...

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 18:38

Xeno Flowers

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 18:38

Is there an online way to shop for food banks?

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 18:39

Sorry, I should google. Being lazy

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2017 18:42

I didn't see that, but I caught the tail end of something on the radio about this earlier in the week - probably Woman's Hour. It was asking for donations of sanpro to foodbanks.

TyneTeas · 15/03/2017 18:44

You can donate money online to a lot of them, but i doubt online shopping is cost-effective

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 18:54

Thanks, Tyne, I will look to do that. I always forget when shopping as the container is after the checkouts and there's no sign on the way in.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2017 19:06

I guess we need to put it on our lists along with naice ham and pombears.

PencilsInSpace · 15/03/2017 19:18

Lovely thread, thank you Smile I've donated.

HelenDenver · 15/03/2017 20:36

I don't have a list. I wander vaguely as a cloud.

IAmAmy · 23/03/2017 18:24

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-39372800 Some more women doing this - according to the video it's part of a national campaign which is lovely (though shouldn't be needed).
