Are young white males being radicalised online?

I picked this up off Facebook, only have a crappy link which I will post in a minute but I thought it was an interesting question.
Given that we know the Internet can be used to radicalise people (we have seen this with some terrorists) is it possible the Internet has been the driving force in the backlash against a progressive society that is manifesting itself in brexit/trump elections?
Is this accidental or is it orchestrated? I've seen so many posts on here claiming "trump isn't sexist" that I feel we are being astroturfed about it.
How do groups like Mgtow/red pill/surrendered wives play in? Do they play in?
If so what can those of us who want a more progressive and equal society do to counter this radicalisation?

Actually I'm a man and not exactly young anymore. It's not just young men, I'd been making some headway with some male friends to perhaps consider things a bit more from women's point of view. The last year to 18 months in some cases I'm getting a lot more push back.

It's just things have become a shade more polarised at the moment. My prediction that now we've had Brexit/Trump once those realities have sunk in people will swing back towards the more conciliatory and sensible.

Trump/Brexit are as much as anything a push back against a long running tactic of the left to shame/guilt people to follow a certain line. Elements of the right have just decided "fuck it we don't care what people think of us anymore." This has acted as a valve through which many frustrations have been poured out.

This frustration has included proper evils like racism and sexism to spew out, but in amongst it are genuine and valid frustrations of social inequality, people who have been left behind by globalism and a general disenfranchisement and alienation from society.

The mistake would be to just focus and demonise the racism/sexism and thus reject any of the rest of it as valid. That will just embolden and feed the worst who will carry along the rest into genuinely sexist and racist paradigms.

I think the Internet allows people with similar opinions to link together, they validate each others opinions. Whereas previously you might have just ranted on your own and considered yourself a little out there; now you find people to agree with you and you're not on your own you're a crusading underdog ready to take on the establishment.

Once a critical mass of people with similar opinions get together it becomes almost impossible to express an opposing one eg try being pro-porn in a feminist thread or suggesting hush is overpriced and poorly made in style and beauty.

I becomes harder and harder for moderate voices to be heard as often they are way less impassioned and therefore interesting as more extreme speakers.

Polarisation of opinion on a global scale is a byproduct of the Internet age. If you're a smart leader you absolutely try to use it to promote your cause (Britain First is a good example of this)

Dervel I hope you are right in your prediction. I feel more gloomy and that there is the potential for the gains over the past 30 years to be significantly rolled back. But I am a pessimist.

Well one the reasons I am maintaining a positive outlook is that I'm resolved to actually try and do something tangible to move the needle in that direction myself. I can't do that if I take a pessimistic outlook (but believe me I empathise with anyone who feels that way at the moment!).

People have made the argument that the liberal left gave rise to Trump, it therefore stands to reason that if our worst fears are realised concerning him, he and his ilk will create the very conditions to allow the very opposite for what he stands for to flourish.

My hope is that someone will therefore come along and unite us properly (wether that is with regards to race/religon/gender (or sex (or whatever))). There is absolutely no reason that this couldn't be a woman! Our job is to keep the home fires burning and be ready to rally when it's time.

The Internet is absolutely teeming with racism and sexism. I frequent the atheist corner of the Internet and the comments against Muslims and women are frightening.

I struggle how to see a vote for Donald trump/brexit aka BoJo, Gove and Farage is a vote for change.
Rich white men running the world is not a change.

Do you feel the maverick movement is orchestrated or has it grown organically?

This is interesting. I am a governor of a school in an incredibly white area, and when we discuss radicalization (as we are statutorily obliged to do) we tend to think in terms of right wing, EDL, Britain First, white supremacist type stuff rather than anything else.

Yeah I thought it was a really interesting question. Especially when you see how people behave on here (like the Mermaids people last week, or the MRA states we get). Its hard not to think there's some orchestration. Where does that become radicalisation as opposed to political organisation?

I think it's organic but a very quick backlash against the progress made by women, POC, LGBT, basically any group that wasn't part of the traditional "inner circle".

But certainly orchestrated when they pile onto people like Sarkesian with death threats and doxxing.
