Look at this story from today's Sunday Times. Intro paragraph is all about the man. Then in second paragraph she is mentioned just as his wife and her name! I honestly don't understand how no one reads these stories in the edit process and thinks, "wtf?!"

And why is his job so significant? The mum could have some great job but it's not mentioned at all.

I know. It's so bloody depressing.

I would presume the woman doesn't work outside the home or has an average/not particualrly well paid job. Whereas they are mentioning the man's job because they are making a point he is well-off and should pay the fine.

Although, you'd think the headline would be more along the lines of "rich bastard refuses to pay fine"; whereas mentioning the "family" yet going on about him doesn't make sense... hmm.

So it would appear from the Times' story that the father, not the mother, is being prosecuted (I can't read it all, as it's behind a paywall). Gotta love that Patriarchy, cunningly going for dad to cover it's tracks....

No, he story makes clear that hey are both being prosecuted. Although if only he is that would irritate me even more - as the man he is more responsible than her?!

I am sure that yes, here is a subtle point being made that they can afford it. But, the point is hat whoever earns the money, as a couple they could afford it. Not him.

This type of article is rife in mainstream media. And it never ceases to infuriate me. It also never ceases to amaze me how quickly on each occasion there's someone who can make a "legitimate" argument as to why the man is
Mentioned first and the woman only in the context of her relationship with him.

But, the point is hat whoever earns the money, as a couple they could afford it. Not him.

We see this on the Relationships board a lot - one abusive DH after another who thinks it's his money, not family money.

And now on a macro level... grr
