FFS Sainsbury's, so near and yet so far

Supergirl is one of very few female superheroes. I loved her when I was young and would have loved a Supergirl dressing up outfit. I'd absolutely buy one for my DD.

I do not recall her outfit being pink.

But people would get confused if the outfit wasn't pink. They might buy it for a boy or something. You have to signpost this stuff really clearly to prevent the break down of social order.

Do you think they'll have to change Gambit's costume to blue instead of pink in case little boys get confused?

In a way I'm just glad that they are half way there with a Supergirl costume, whilst I can't get too worked up at it being pink I still don't see why on earth it is necessary to change her costume colours.

What's bizarre is that they've got a red Supergirl style swimming costume that pretty much sold out instantly so it's not like there isn't a market for the proper colour.

It's got a frothy skirt to distinguish it from the superman outfit (which has fake muscles) so I just can't fathom why someone actively decided to change the colour. Surely a parent who buys a Supergirl outfit for their DD is looking for something different to the sparkly princess dresses.

I'm actively put off buying this because of the colour. Not because I hate pink (DD wears a lot of pink), but because it's wrong.

Asda sell a Supergirl costume with the red. They also do a Batgirl one which is ace.

They kindly added the fluffy pink netting to remind her of what kind of thoughts she must have.

God forbid she strays into dangerous male territory and starts making her own decisions or forming her own opinions or wanting financial control of her own life.

Sainsbos have only our best interests at heart.

Pink isn't an awful colour per se. I'm sure there are human beings who like it well enough. It's the 'pinkification' of everything aimed at girls that gets me. Especially when firms change the established colour of an item to pink.

That's a horrible shade of pink as well.

It's supposed to be the costume of a recognised character, why do they have to mess up the colours?

I was in Sainsburys the other day and didn't see the Supergirl costume but saw this batgirl costume which apart from a bit of sparkle I thought excellently non-twee.

I also noticed online when looking up said costume that all their generic dressing up stuff is described as "kids" - not boys or girls. E.g. Kids Darth Vader costume, Kids Elsa dress etc.

I don't dislike pink, DD1 likes pink after all. But like pp I dislike how so many clothes aimed at girls just have to be pink or glittery. I saw a lovely pair of trainers for DD the other day, but the glittery toe cap put me off. Partly because of personal taste, I don't like glitter, and partly because I hate how it's so difficult to find girls clothes that aren't pink/glittery/frilly. I've noticed that the boys section has a much wider variety of colours more often than not, whereas the girls section is mostly pinks, purples, maybe with the odd splash of yellow/blue/red it's frustrating.

There's absolutely no need for them to change the colour of the Supergirl costume, they've already added a frilly skirt. It's pointless.

This is it for me - it's not that there's anything wrong with pink - DS2 is in a pink phase - he has a bright pink t-shirt with a smiling ice cream on it, and when wearing it, everyone assumes he's a girl, not a problem, he doesn't care, I don't care, but that's how strong the colour stuff has got.

DS1 isn't as into pink, but does get a bit disappointed that the costumes that are aimed at him don't have any glitter/metallic like the ones with skirts (and he's old enough now that he doesn't want to wear a skirt - can't blame him, neither do I) - and as a result chose the Captain Phasma, silver stormtrooper costume.

It's not that anything's bad, but, that it would be nice for everyone to have a little of everything rather than this hard line between pink/sparkly/skirt and dark/plain/trousers

The new Supergirl is shaping up to be much 'darker' than I thought. Still not a patch on Flash though.

When I was a kid I remember being irritated that Supergirl was a girl, not a woman and Superman wasn't Superboy. Plus flying around in a skirt? Why didn't she get trousers?

Yes, dd2 is 10 months old and has very little in the way of hair at the moment, her pushchair is red too. And if she's not wearing obviously girly/pink clothes lots of people assume she's a boy "look at him isn't he lovely" etc. It doesn't bother me and I don't often have the heart to correct people as they're just being nice, but it does really highlight how much influence colours have on us in terms of gender.

Do they mess around with boy costumes to make them more boy-friendly? Maybe some skulls on the Captain America outfit? No, of course not, because Captain America's actual outfit doesn't have skulls so that would be stupid.

Yes, you're right. They are unnecessary though, I don't buy costumes with them on if I can possibly avoid it.
