Not enough women in the police force.

On the news it highlighted that the police force didn't have proportionally enough minorities and women. Just talking about the woman part. Surly that's because of the difference between men and women. Women's brains make us more interested in caring. In my work it is dominated by women - OT's , physios, speech therapists , dietitians , paediatricians , nurses. Etc. These are well paid highly qualified jobs. You never hear the ratio in these occupations is biased towards women.
Surly we are made differently and that is why we in most cases choose a different career. I suspect that if there was absolutely no discrimination certain careers would be still dominated by a particular sex.
I don't see that as a problem but just how we are.

I sometimes wish I had taken my alternative career path of joining the police force. I'd have been bloody brilliant at it. Not because or in spite of my gender though.

Why do you think women's brains are inherently different to men's? Do you consider socialisation into stereotyped gender roles from birth to have any effect on women and men's career choices?

Or there are more women in caring roles because all the way from birth society tells us that women are "caring" "carers" "nurturers" etc etc etc and society tells men they are "strong" "unemotional" "rational" and so on

I was recently lucky enough to meet a number of senior police officers in the MET. Of the leadership of the Metropolitan police there are a number of seriously impressive women.

The Assistant Commissioner in charge of territorial policing (day to day on the job police - 18,000 in London); the head of Counter Terrorism; the person who runs the 999 system for London (and the 101 system so loved on mumsnet). All women who have risen through the force and command a large team of officers very successfully. If you transcribed the conversation I had with them Vs the male assistant commissioners I interviewed and read it back I would challenge anyone to tell male from female. They are just competent professionals.

I agree, OP. As a man, I am pretty much incapable of being caring and compassionate. It's the way my brain is wired, y'see.

Could also have something to do with attitudes such as this in the Police service? Where leaving a voicemail on a DV victim's phone suggesting she's a fucking slag is dismissed by the copper's lawyer as just being one of them things, innit?

Using the analogy of the film the Matrix this is the blue pill, we all get conditioned that there are these specific roles that as men and women we must play which generally leave women with the sticky end of the stick. The red pill is that men and women in the modern world have not actually that much difference if at all between each other with pretty much any job being able to be done by either.

Society has historically put a lower value on certain jobs that women generally end up in but dress it up with crap like women are more caring, (except in the army we are told where if a women got winged by a bullet all male soldiers drop everything to tend to their needs)

-percentage of successful applicants by their gender/ethnicity.

As 'not enough people applying' is different from 'people being unfairly assessed'

Sadly, 30% women is sort of an upper limit, as people are socialized to feel that the numbers of women and men are equal if there are 30% women.

Besides, this is not just any old job. This is the police force we are talking about. Police can be used as an instrument of oppression if not all discriminated against groups are represented in there.

Therefore, it does not even matter at all whether women would prefer other jobs. (Which I don't think is the case anyway). The number of women in the police force needs to be raised to, and kept at, a steady 50%.
If women really preferred other jobs, there would have to be better pay for female cops. But that's nonsense, anyway.
If we are going to argue with biology, I'm just going to say ... what is more dangerous, a male bear ... or a female with young? Protecting the helpless, a woman's job since mammals evolved.

1. Policing is a deeply caring job. I'm a police officer. I deal with elderly burglary victims, teenage girls who've been sexually assaulted minding their own business in the street, young children from terrible home environments, men who've been punched in the face by pissed idiots for no reason, and many more. You can't do that properly if you aren't a caring person.

1. While there are female high fliers in the police, there is an issue with recruitment and retention. Once women have had children they very often drop out of the 'career' policing path, go part time, take back office jobs, so there are far far fewer women in visible and front line roles than men (except in 'wimmins' jobs, usually child protection and sexual offences investigation)

There are many reasons why women are under represented in the police.

• a boys club culture particularly in some units
• vicious shift rota
• unfriendly customers
• initial training away from home for months
• until the 90's pregnancy would prevent promotion

I think the police are working to make real strides in recruitment and retention of female police officers.

I was reading research which also picked out things previously not considered - women are under represented in armed policing. One reason was that the body armour and equipment is extremely heavy - and that is something that can be addressed.
