Abused 10 yr old in Paraguay denied abortion - petition

TalkingintheDark · 18/05/2015 23:00

I've just signed this petition - a 10 year old girl in Paraguay, abused by her stepfather, reported the abuse to police but was ignored, and is now pregnant.

And they won't even let her have an abortion.

Two girls between the ages of 10 and 14 give birth every day in Paraguy to babies conceived out of rape/abuse.

I don't even know where to begin.

There is hope for a change in the law around abortion at least, hence the petition. I'm going to put it on other boards too but this seemed a good place to start.

In sisterhood...

I signed a similar Amnesty petition weeks ago. Surprised it's taken so long for her case to be mentioned on here.

Here is the Amnesty page. You can write to the president.

Rather surprised at the lack of interest in this thread. Bump

Thanks all. Thanks for the link, Lass.

As I understand it, it's today they're debating a change in the law, but people from all over the world are still signing it every second, so it's still worth it.

This is desperately sad and life threatening for the poor girl. I signedover the weekend but thanks for posting TalkingintheDark

I haven't signed either petition - what do you think they'll achieve, other than irritating the people of Paraguay, if they ever even hear about it?

bearleftmonkeyright · 20/05/2015 06:29

I have signed and shared. Amnesty international can clearly help make a change.

paxtecum · 20/05/2015 06:29

Apocalypse: what a defeatist attitude you have.
The power of the Internet is quite amazing.
No government likes being criticized over their in humane treatment of children.

If no one stood up for injustices there would still be segregation in the US and apartheid in S Africa.

TheCowThatLaughs · 20/05/2015 06:37

Signed. What has happened to the stepfather? Hopefully he's been locked up?

ApocalypseThen · 20/05/2015 07:44

No government likes being criticized over their in humane treatment of children.

They probably care less than you think, unless the criticism is at state level and involves sanctions.

I'm pretty sure that no country makes its laws by counting internet clicks and people who have probably been working on this for some time will resent the implication that all it takes is for some foreigners to become annoyed enough to do some internetting on the basis of one case for everything to change. If you really want to do something, find the people who do actually work on this and give them money for their legal teams and staff.

Also, Amnesty defending the rights of women and girls to not be treated as public sex resources? They fell off that donkey some time ago.
