Blue for boys, pink for girls.

Does anyone know when and how this happened?

I can find lots pointing out that blue was linked with purity & and the Virgin Mary, therefore for girls and pink being considered a level down from red, red being a strong masculine colour , so for boys.

I'm just wondering why/when the flip happened?

I have done a bit of reading around this before too. I don't think it was really the case that pink was for boys. I think that babies wore a lot of white (which sounds hard work to us now, but actually was easier than delicate dyes as you just lobbed a load of bleach on it). When colours came in, there seems to have been a period where loads of different rules got bandied about until one 'stuck'

Nope, pink was for boys/men.

In medieval iconography, Joseph is usually in pink, and the Virgin in blue.

The blue came from the medieval period when lapis lazuli was the most expensive pigment so consequently was used for the Virgin Mary as she was the mother of God. The symbolism meant the more blue in your picture, the richer you were and the more pious. Red is a very difficult pigment to keep stable and again just showed you were wealthy.

I'm told in Spain girls were blue and boys pink...
