Is this the right place to rant about pink toys?

First lego, then Nerf, now Kinder eggs, all colour coded to pinks and lilacs for the versions that girls, apparently, should play with. How are the toy companies allowed to get away with such horrific stereotyping and brainwashing? Any chance of a mumsnet campaign?

There is a Let Toys be Toys campaign.

And Pink Stinks.

Or you could ignore the fact that such campaigns already exist and think you've stumbled on something new, perhaps?

Just don't buy them, and support the existing campaigns - starting yet another one will just dilute their efficacy.

sansissu · 20/11/2013 19:13

There's no need to be snarky. The fact I
that I wasn't aware that there were campaigns rather points to how effective they have been in mainstream media so far. However, thank you to all posters for the info, I will certainly now try to do my bit to spread awareness of those campaigns where I can.

Of course there was no need for snarkiness - this is the right place for such a rant, they happen here quite frequently Grin.

The Let Toys be Toys campaign actually started from an MN thread a little over a year ago - its primary aim wasn't so much at the manufacturers as at the retailers, and it's having quite a bit of success already in getting some of them to stop labelling sections as 'boys' and 'girls'. If you're on FB/twitter please do publicise. Smile

I think this video sums up your feelings quite accurately. Girls should not be underestimated.

madwomanintheatt1c · 21/11/2013 00:39

Quite, sansissu.

It's just wildly depressing that there are so many repeat threads about the same subject.

Nowt wrong with ranting. Googling 'gendered toys campaigns' would have given you a head start and a cause (several causes) to support, and then you could have ranted about inefficacy.Grin

Alternatively, you could read 'Cinderella are my daughter' and adopt a lassez faire attitude like everyone else whose d daughters are thankfully past the toys r us stage. Grin

Welcome to capitalism, OP. If corporations thought they could make more money by selling girls toys that reeked of dog shit, they would do it. They don't make the rules, we do. They just exploit them for maximum profit.

TheDoctrineOfWho · 21/11/2013 06:36

Biggedy, they do choose the product lines, though. They have invented a boy-girl split in toys, colours, clothing to reduce hand me downs and sell more stuff.

AuntieStella · 21/11/2013 07:20

Perhaps better to post about this in AIBU - fewer MNers have that forum hidden, so it may be the more effective place.

It might build on the various threads there about pinkification (recently of Kinder eggs and nerf guns - both of which had multiple threads) just in time for Christmas shopping.
