Boden: girls don't grow up?

Boys can grow up to be a builder, astronaut or rock star, while girls can aspire to be a mouse or a sledging pink penguin. Inspiring...

Please review if it annoys you too. All the reviews apart from mine are saying how much their son loves it!

Link doesn't work......

Bowlersarm · 27/09/2013 20:27

I assume they do the research and sell items girls would like to wear?

Quangle · 27/09/2013 20:35

Boden is terrible for gender stereotyping. I don't buy their boys' clothes as they are so unimaginitively gendered and nothing better than you can get much cheaper elsewhere. They occasionally have something special for DD that's worth the Boden premium but never for DS. So they lose money through their insistence on "boys are tough, girls are pretty" crap - at least from me they do.

Phineyj · 27/09/2013 20:39

Obviously it is marketed at the mums but how do Boden know there isn't a market for girls' ones if they don't sell them? Why do there need to be gendered careers tshirts for 0-3s anyway? Hmm I was just surprised by the overt sexism.

Not sure what I did wrong with the link last time.

I have bought stuff from them, hence receiving the catalogue, but I'm going back to the Scandinavian suppliers now. I'm just going to show DH. He loves space stuff and will be Angry on DD's behalf!

Is the rock star one not a 'girls' one? The builder one also looks fairly 'girly' too. I don't buy from Biden anyway tho, I just don't have £14 to spend in 1 t shirt.

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 27/09/2013 20:46

I agree tho, it's very sexist.

BasilBabyEater · 28/09/2013 15:39

I was just about to write a review, bic-stylee, but got put off by the need to register. Grin

Has anyone ever seen a slogan t-shirt that was not awful?

princessnumber2 · 28/09/2013 17:57

Having trouble seeing what categories these are in on my phone. Are they marketed as unisex baby or 'boys'? I tend to buy 'boys' and 'girls' clothes for my dds as for some reason many retailers think that, being girls, they should be in pink and purple uniform.

I prefer plain stuff in neutral colours so probably wouldn't buy either a cutesy mouse or a construction one (though my daughters both hate baking and love construction). I always have a moan when shops sell stereotyped nonsense tho. Is it because the builder is a bloke? Or because the grow-up model is a boy?

Why can't they all just sell nice striped tops in various colours for CHILDREN and stop shoving gendered cupcakes and dinosaurs down our throats?

Please god let no-one come along and say that girls and boys actually have these gender-based preferences naturally. (As I think it might have something to do with being pushed down the BOYS' TOYS aisle in the supermarket from age 0...)

And the next person that asks me how old my little boy is (because my little girl is not wearing her government-issued pink bow) is going to get slapped round the face with a copy of the Second Sex.

Sorry. Rant from nowhere.

NoComet · 28/09/2013 18:02

the rock star is purple and thats a girl in the picture wearing it, I'm sure.

SmokedMackerel · 28/09/2013 18:32

I think the baby stuff isn't explicitly seperated into girl and boys stuff.

I remember idly flicking through a Boden catalogue before I had children, and noting that the names for the colours used for the boys clothes were all outdoorsy and adventurous (storm, moss, surf) and all the girls clothes colours seemed to be foods (cocoa, strawberry, sorbet). Don't know if it still the same, they have given up on sending me catalogues, but I did think it was interesting.
