Violence against women on TV

Is it just me or is there a sudden increase in programmes where the main theme seems to be violence against women? And very graphic violence at that? I wonder what impact this is having on society in general and women in particular?

I think you are right, and sexual violence against women in particular seems to be the entire basis of quite a lot of programs esp coming out of the states.

I was watching luther last night and commented to DH that the way sexual violence against women is presented in many of these shows is completely different to how sexual violence against men or children is presented on the rare occasions that is the story.

Presumably the program makers will make what people will watch and that means that sexual violence against women is a crowd-pleaser is a way that against men or women it is not. The way female bodies "on the slab" are often presented (camera lingering over naked breasts etc) is also really dodgy and again completely different to how they show other types of victims.

I don't know what it might be doing to society. I think it has probably always been this way but these days is more open and graphic.

God must proof read, should read

I think most of it is awful, but I actually really enjoy Law and Order SVU. good female leads and frequently deals with and dispels rape myths. in fact all the ones I can think of.

On this theme....one of the big brother contestants has just been thrown out for aggressive behaviour towards a woman he seemed to be getting into a relationship with. Allegedly he told her he would 'nut' her.

Interesting to see how this is explained and, if done properly, it will hopefully highlight how unacceptable abuse towards women is.

I still watch them!

I say to DH - oh look "women being horribly murdered" is on in a minute - shall we watch it?

Good that contestant got thrown out.

not seen this series but that is good.

There was that thing a while ago in a different country where a male contestant had sex with a woman who was pissed out of her head and out of it. ie rape. She wouldn't press charges or anything there was a big outcry in certain quarters, why wasn't it stopped etc.
