Daily Telegraph prints article telling women to STFU about DV because it's attention-seeking

There's a comment underneath pointing out that when Nigella Lawson is the victim of DV, everyone is shocked and outraged on her behalf, but when this opera singer is, (working class, outsider) she's called an attention seeker.

I'm not sure - I thought it might also be to do with the fact that no-one can deny Nigella was attacked by Saatchi because he did it in public. It's basically sharia standards - unless it's witnessed by at least 4 men, we can dismiss the claim and say it's just women being hysterical attention seekers.

This is disgusting! How dare he?? And what on earth is his point? Why did he write this in the first place? But mostly HOW DARE HE???

Ewww...But more than disgust, I feel scared. I fear that more men than not think DV is just another thing women get hysterical about.

What a nobber. I am not a journo so I don't have to be eloquent. Oh, then nor is he! It's attitudes like that stop women from speaking out against domestic abuse within relationships either at the time or after their relationship has ended and they have felt able to do so without fear of reprisals, for fear of not being believed, or having the abuse minimised.

The worst thing is that he isn't saying she's claiming that he hit her in a bid for attention. He believes her, dismisses it as standard matrimonial behaviour, and thinks she's attention seeking because she's talked about it. I can easily believe that men/people out there feel like this, but I can't believe newspapers can't see what they're saying when they print shit like this.

I was at school with the author of that article & he was very mysogonistic even at 17!

I am not surprised by what he said but appalled that it was allowed to be published.

Oh, her being slapped by H is all okay because she is "working class". Weird article.

Only small plus point I can see is that most of those commenting have called him on his appalling misogyny, class prejudice and dreadful attitude to minimalising DV. Telegraph readers have just gone up a bit in my estimation.

Buffy - didn't mean they were all reasonable, just that enough were (more than half, I'd say) that I felt just a little bit better. But I've seen articles where 100% of below-the-line comments were misogynist trolls (mostly CIF, admittedly, which seems to attract every misogynist in the whole world).
