Some very interesting timelines of the films and co stars of certain male film actors.

It pretty much bears out the stereotype...I was surprised not to see Michael Douglas and Sean Connery there: I think they are some of the worst offenders.

Chubfuddler · 23/04/2013 02:20

When I saw the title of your thread Richard Gerry immediately leapt to mind. Some of his pairings have been creepy and wrong.

Chubfuddler · 23/04/2013 02:21

I suppose they're not currently A list enough Bof.

What on earth are you doing up now?

BOF · 23/04/2013 02:27

I'm enjoying a night off dd2 (at her Dad's), so a lie-in tomorrow, and the first night I can drink after a week of antibiotics Grin.

kickassangel · 23/04/2013 02:36

There was a 30 year gap between Hepburn and Astaire in Funny Face.

Can you imagine that being done in reverse?

Chubfuddler · 23/04/2013 02:46

Well only as the shocking and disgusting crux of the whole film. Wasn't Anne Bancroft only about ten years older than dustin Hoffman? I may be wrong.

BOF · 23/04/2013 02:49

Anne Bancroft was only six years older than Dustin Hoffman, and just eight years older than her screen daughter Katharine Ross.

CheerfulYank · 23/04/2013 02:56

On the show The Walking Dead there are two characters (Daryl and Carol) who are quite close and there's endless online speculation about whether or not they'll become romantically involved.

You wouldn't believe some of the negative comments..."she's so old ", "he needs someone hot", "it really seems like more of a mother/son thing", etc.

In real life, the actor is 44 and the actress is 47. Angry

Obviously only voluptuous 20 something's with long hair are sexual beings, even during a zombie apocalypse. FFS.

msrisotto · 23/04/2013 16:38

By the thread title I thought you were talking about that awful hair colour advert where the bloke is going about how much him and his wife have been through and how he has age but "Kate is just Kate" Hasn't changed a bit! Certainly not doing that godawful ageing thing. Anyway buy this hair dye blah blah blah

There was huge outcry when Amy Adams (38) was cast as Lois Lane opposite Henry Cavill (29) as Clark Kent in Man of Steel ... even though Lois is supposed to be a very experienced award-winning investigative senior journalist and Clark is a tyro in his first role working for a major paper.

CheerfulYank · 23/04/2013 17:40

Amy Adams is fab, he should be so lucky!

Darkesteyes · 23/04/2013 18:36

We do seem to be going backwards in some ways. The film Tim which was made in 1979 cast an older Piper Laurie against younger Mel Gibson.
I remember watching this one Sunday afternoon in the late 80s. Its a beautifully made touching film.

Interesting analysis/article. Not surprising of course (sadly). The only thing I wondered about was the implication that it was the leading man who was choosing the younger women. I would have assumed that was the studios.

NiceTabard · 23/04/2013 19:48

I was pleased when in the latest indiana jones film they had the love interest from one of the 80s films instead of getting someone much younger for harrison ford which would be the hollywood norm.

she was 10 years younger than him in the original film but still.

Chubfuddler · 23/04/2013 19:59

I haven't seen the last Indiana jones film. I loved Karen Allen in the first one (actually I think the age gap in that film is forgivable as it was actually a plot point - back story that he had seduced/dumped her years earlier).

NiceTabard · 23/04/2013 20:09

It was just so much better than teaming him up with a 20-something at his age.

So nice to see a woman who isn't under 35 in a romantic / action type main role.

So nice to see the continuity of the character rather than chucking out that plot in favour of some more stereotypical eye candy.

nooka · 23/04/2013 21:48

The forth Indy film has Karen Allen in it again which was very cool. Sadly it wasn't a very good movie.

BOF · 23/04/2013 23:20

No, but she was as fab as ever in it.

Darkesteyes · 24/04/2013 00:02

She is also fab in National Lampoons Animal House.

I think you are right BOF, I seem to recall that it was the plot that was the problem! It was great to see her again, always thought she was a much better sidekick than any of the later ones.

StillSeekingSpike · 26/04/2013 13:41

There was an interesting article I can't remember where- about the latest fashion for having leading men in films where they rescue their daughters- such as 'Taken'.
It means the film can have a nubile young women in distress still being rescued by a big man- avoiding icky age gaps, Older Women or any nasty hint of feminism. It's so depressing.
