Just had the following cold call:

BT: Hello, it's x from BT here. Can I speak to MrMardy.

Me: he's at work. I'm MrsMardy. Can I help?

BT: Well we've upgraded our exchange and can offer you an improved Internet access package. Are you interested?

Me: no, we're fine thanks.

BT: Well if it's ok with you I'll call back later and talk to your husband about it.

Me: You need to speak to my husband? Am I not capable of making a decision for myself?

I know it's not the biggest issue in the world but ffs.

And while I'm at it, can someone tell Chris Tarrant it's not acceptable to call fully grown women "good girl". (. Apologies for repetition - said this on another thread too).

What did they say when you asked them?

Things like this piss me off to no end. I'd be tempted to call up customer service and threaten to cancel my account unless they can explain why they believe your husband gets final say on your account.

MumOfTwoCats · 20/07/2012 12:39

FWIW if the account is in his name then he does have the final say.

As I set up all the utilities in our house I have the final say.

Nothing sexist about it. Just admin.

UnChartered · 20/07/2012 12:39

normally i'd be right with you, Mardy but i think they should have explained that any changes to the account have to be handled by the named account holder

Seona1973 · 20/07/2012 12:40

Is the bill in his name or yours? If it is in his name then they would want to speak to him about the account.

Seona1973 · 20/07/2012 12:41

I sort the gas and electric so they are in my name so dh cant change anything on the account. If they phone he gives the phone to me to deal with them.

Bluegrass · 20/07/2012 12:43

If the account is in his name it was probably an open invitation for them to have another crack at getting a yes. If the account was in your name and he had answered and said no he may have found that they wanted to hear it from you to get a definitive answer.

I bet if you'd been interested they wouldn't have wanted to talk to him as that would risk losing a sale!

SardineQueen · 20/07/2012 12:43

If she doesn't have the authority to do anything as the bill is not in her name (OP is it in his name? ours is joint) then they wouldn't have offered her the upgrade would they.

MardyBra · 20/07/2012 12:59

Ok. The account is in his name. I may have acted a little hastily. [sheepish]

Still doesn't make sense as why then did they talk to you about the upgrade?

MardyBra · 20/07/2012 13:08

No I agree Sardine. Maybe he thought I could do a little wifely persuasion on Dh.

I had to call the child benefit people a few years ago, about the bank account our allowance was paid into. It is a joint account, in both mine and my wife's name. The children are ours.

They would not deal with me. They insisted on talking to my wife. As far as I know, both our names are on the 'who owns these children' account! You have to love government departments - dismantling the patriarchy one brick at a time Grin .

skrumle · 23/07/2012 16:07

i would assume the child benefit was in your wife's name... only one person can be named as they then receive home responsibilities protection ensuring that their NI stamp is protected even if they are not working/signing on.

As I've said at least twice before (so don't read it if you're bored silly of hearing it), BT offered a new exchange package something-or-other to Mr AGYG, from whom I had been divorced for at least two years at that time and he had never been on that account anyway - or rather, as it turned out, he had been on it as second user without my knowledge Angry. Don't know what the feck they thought they were playing at.
