Have just been subjected to "Girls Rule" song on CITV's Horrid Henry (a group of girls dancing and singing "Girls rule, girls are cool, down with boys!"), and am feeling incredibly irritated...

also by this strong women advert.

Is it just me, or is stuff like this, where girls/women on TV are portrayed as proclaiming themselves to be so much better than boys/men, really super bloody annoying?

I mean I feel like it's supposed to be a compliment because it's saying how strong/cool women/girls are, but it just feels incredibly patronizing, like we're being pat on the head or thrown a bone to distract us from the fact that really, we don't rule at all....(eg. I'd bet most CITV shows are presented by men).

Plus it sets up a gender competition that's really unnecessary (DS was booing at screen)

I haven't seen either of these things but your post sounds very sensible to me!

The Sure Strong advert I have seen doesn't compare women with men or imply they are better at all. It just says women are strong, which I think is quite a good message to send out (although I agree it is done in a bit of a patronizing way). So often a measure of women's strength is made in comparison to men's e.g. in sport so I thought it was quite refreshing just to say women are strong full stop.

I like the sure advert - it's not having a pop at anybody, just stating women are strong.

And they're not smiling in it - I think that's refreshing.

Yes I suppose at least they're not flicking their hair and selling anti-ageing cream!

I hadn't seen that sure advert before, I actually quite like it. The thing you mention on CITV would get right up my nose though.

Thinking about this again (probably far more than is healthy!), it is more patronising than I first considered. You wouldn't get a male version of the advert saying men are strong as that obviously goes without saying Hmm

messyisthenewtidy · 08/05/2012 19:39

I think that's what gets up my nose Abigail. Why the NEED to point out women are strong, or make up silly songs about how they rule? Unless of course, that isn't the way it is in RL.

It's a bit like you see plenty of female on male violence played for laughs, when in real life it's more likely to be the other way round. Or the bossy controlling wife + easy going husband trope that abounds in the media.

Ostensibly it just makes women seem like they lord it over men, which just skews the inequities that exist in reality.
