this is a petition for him to be stripped of this award, if anyone's interested.

Just came on to post about this. Pretty disgusting. What were they thinking??

KRITIQ · 28/04/2012 12:33

Just got the email about it from change. Other sports figures have been stripped of awards following conviction for offences (I'm thinking of Lester Piggot, for example.) I agree proceeding with the award would send all the wrong messages.

AmberLeaf · 28/04/2012 12:52

How can they possibly justify this?

JuliaScurr · 29/04/2012 12:39

I've signed and shared

TiggyD · 29/04/2012 12:42

If he was one of the best 11 players in that league, I think they would have been better off naming just 10 players this year.

Kveta · 29/04/2012 12:44

have signed. thanks for sharing.

EdithWeston · 29/04/2012 12:48

They can't just name 10. It's team of the year, and all teams have a starting line up of 11.

The initial result was based on a vote taken before the conviction. Personally, I think they should have rerun the vote after the conviction. Instead, they seem to be hiding behind the possibility he might appeal.

JuliaScurr · 29/04/2012 12:51

At least, postpone the awards. But they didn't, did they?

SardineQueen · 29/04/2012 13:08

What?

They gave him an AWARD 2 days after being convicted of rape?

Are they taking the PISS?

That has made me so angry. They might as well just gob in the face of all teh rape victims in the UK.

ButterPecanMuffin · 29/04/2012 13:52

I agree with Edith, they should have rerun the vote for the League One Team of the Year, after the conviction.

I saw someone on Twitter say, "Knowing the PFA, they didn't want the cost of having to reprint everything."

Sounds about right.

OptimisticPessimist · 29/04/2012 14:33

Surely they could have just given it to the person that came 12th, or came 2nd for Evans' position or whatever? Utterly disgusting, have signed and shared.

ButterPecanMuffin · 29/04/2012 15:36

One of the excuses I saw the PFA give, was they would be accused of "fiddling" the vote, or something like that.

I'd hardly call preventing an honor being bestowed on a convicted rapist, as being vote fiddling, I'd call it common sense and decency.

carernotasaint · 29/04/2012 17:47

JEEEsus just when i thought this couldnt get any worse and then it does. BLOODY HELL. DISGUSTING.

Nyac · 29/04/2012 18:26

Julie Bindel writes about misogyny in football in the Guardian:

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/apr/29/ched-evans-fottball-culture-misogyny

ledkr · 29/04/2012 18:34

Signed. I am so annoyed about this so can only imagine how his victim must feel.I do hope she is aware of the petition so that she doesnt feel so alone.

FrillyMilly · 30/04/2012 15:07

I've signed it and shared it. It is disgusting how abuse of women, even those that have been raped, is acceptable. Julie Bindel does make a very good comparison between the outrage that someone would make a negative comment about fabrics muamba an get arrested yet someone can name and abuse a rape victim without consequence.

Sometimes I feel like we are banging our head against a wall trying to get equality. Why should we have to fight so bloody hard to be treated decently when we make half the population!

(Am currently having a FB debate with a friend about this and trying not to fall out with him about it Angry )

EmilyPollifaxInnocentTourist · 04/05/2012 14:45

I suspect we may need to start a support group for people falling out with friends on FB over this because it's happening to lots of us.

bintofbohemia · 04/05/2012 14:50

Really? I can't understand it at all. I pointed out that it's all really quite simple; rape is bad, rapists are bad, rape apologists are bad. Rapists being footballers (or boxers) does not cancel out the rape part. What's to argue about?! Muppets.

EmilyPollifaxInnocentTourist · 04/05/2012 16:14

I agree completely. It is so very distressing how many people are making excuses for him. :(

FrothyDragon · 04/05/2012 17:22

Ha, luckily only lost one friend over this so far...

Bint, you're right. VERY right. :( The excuses have been terrifying.
