Illegal to sleep with prostitutes below 21

I was watching the Big Questions yesterday and one segment focused on Jon Manns private bill through Parliament,
This is to make it a crime to sleep with a prostitute who is under 21??

I was sat there thinking of this board funnily enough and what do you think of it?

I couldn't find an article sorry.

Doubt it's got much chance of passing, but certainly serves the purpose of raising awareness of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking, which in itself is a positive thing.

I would suggest in theory that measure that makes it more difficult for pimps and johns to exploit and abuse women and other men through prostitution is a positive step. Young women and men are likely to be the most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, so I get the idea of steps to protect them, at least as a step. Measures that criminalise pimps and johns are also positive, in my view, so long as prostitutes are not criminalised but rather supported and given opportunities to escape and recover.

But, the other side of the coin is that by setting the age 21 limit, it could appear to legitimise the use and abuse of prostitutes over that age, and would definitely be wrong if it included steps legalise prostitution of those over 21.

My guess is Jon Manns knows the private members bill doesn't stand a snowball's chance in the hot place of getting through, but he's using it as an opportunity to draw attention to the problem in hopes that other, more concrete measures can be employed to protect and support prostituted women (and men,) and criminalise the actions of pimps and john in exploiting and abusing them.

I doubt the men who like having sex with 13 year old prostitutes would suddenly have an attack of conscience were the legal age raised to 21.

Not quite sure where the logic for Joh Manns' bill comes from but at first glance I'm not convcinced.

What Kritique said

MightyNice · 02/04/2012 16:24

uuuggghhhhh at massage parlour man having no idea whether the women he has sex with are underage or not

what is wrong with some men anyway? why do they do it?

SardineQueen · 02/04/2012 16:26

What about the men who have sex with 16yo prostitutes though, mrsarchie.

The idea of it being illegal to pay for sex with anyone under 21 sounds like a good idea to me.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 16:27

Aw I saw that he really squirmed lol.

Also often in prostitution underage girls are used as men will pay more for it so I agree something needs to be done.

I would support raising the age from 18, as current, to 21.

SardineQueen · 02/04/2012 16:34

I didn't know it was 18 at the moment.

I know the lib dems wanted to reduce the age you are allowed to be in porn films from 18 to 16.

MightyNice · 02/04/2012 16:36

gobby racist northern woman is funny though

KRITIQ · 02/04/2012 16:42

The Lib Dems, sometimes, honestly Shock

TheWomanFormerlyKnownAsSGM · 02/04/2012 16:56

The Lib Dems are fucking insane. They really are.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2012 16:57

Hmm, I understand the logic but can't agree with them.

SardineQueen · 02/04/2012 17:14

That doesn't talk about being in the films. Where did I get that from? Confused

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2012 17:21

Well, I suppose the same logic would apply. But then, child actors appear in non-porn films they wouldn't be allowed to watch. Confused myself now!

TrophyEyes · 02/04/2012 17:22

I never thought I'd see the day where I'm mentally applauding a tory.

KRITIQ · 02/04/2012 17:26

(trying to imagine what mental applause looks like! Grin )

TrophyEyes · 02/04/2012 17:32

It's like applause...

Just... erm... mental?

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 17:57

I have always wondered though if you can have sex at 16 but arent an adult until 18, most kids are forced out of care at 16 , but again arent adults until 18.
can drive at 17 , but not an adult until 18 arrggh.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 02/04/2012 18:36

There are loads of anomolies

join the army
smoke
do the lottery vs other gambling
drink alcohol
etc etc

interesting that the lib dems focussed on the anomolies surrounding matters relating to sex

skrumle · 02/04/2012 20:18

I would argue that they should move the age of consent/marriage to 18 with some kind of allowance for people under that age to have sex with people within a few years of their age. Smoking is now 18, and I think 18 is a more suitable age to be viewed as an adult than 16.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 21:15

It is stupid that 16 year olds are allowed to have sex, but horror gasp they get pregnant its wrong because they are not adults that is ridiculous.

But yeah back on tangent,
I dunno I think It will benefit some people but,
the impression I got was it was aimed at indoor prostitutes?
who essentially are more protected anyway.
I think the streets need some action in other ways.
Getting more laws there that criminalise the exploiters rather than the exploited.

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 02/04/2012 21:19

Getting more money into the care system would make the biggest difference to street workers. Buggering around with ages of consent will do nothing to help them.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 21:21

I agree I bet the fact a lot of them are turfed out at 16 does nothing to help.

I have a bit of a problem with the expression 'sleep with' being used to mean sex, especially when it's used in the sense of of 'sleep with prostitutes.'
