I was just wondering the same. I hadn't realised quite how much of a knob he was until his appearance on Question Time recently .

A debate has to have two sides. And it was fairly clear which side the editorial team / presenters were on. Essentially, he was there as a stooge to make the point about how ridiculous and outmoded the status quo actually is.
