This website has made me feel a little bit nauseous.

Ok, don't usually post in here, and am incredibly unarticulate, but after googling some teenspeak I heard today I came across this website and am just totally saddened by the products and the blog.

WTAF does anyone want to promote such horribleness of some of the Tees and, lawks the blog just reads horribly. And such an awful company name. Gah.

I'm not entirely sure that this is a true Femnist thread, but i was hoping to find some allies to the hideousness.

Sad

I really really don't see what you've got your undies in a bundle about. T-shirts with fake leopard print and indeed t-shirts with a picture of someone sticking up their middle finger are hardly shocking.

KRITIQ · 05/03/2012 22:11

I think the fact that the company is called "I whore tees," might be a source of some despair.

solidgoldbrass · 05/03/2012 22:12

Actually I think the whole enterprise is rather sweet and well-meaning. Are you sure you've linked to the right site?

PeanutButterChocolate · 05/03/2012 22:14

Ew. Absolutely vile. I don't know if it's a feminist issue either but I hate any kind of T-shirt with rude and stupid imagery or slogans. Their are just as many awful ones for men. Super tacky.

Obviously I am wearing my twinset and pearls today then sgb. Grin

Hmm... what would I have done for one of those tees when I was about 15? (Still really like the zebra skin, actually.)
Is there a point I'm missing here?

solidgoldbrass · 05/03/2012 23:21

Looking at some of the imagery I'm not sure that it isn't a sort of idealistic/rebel teen thing eg We Are All Prostitutes (a popular slogan from the 80s...)

I really do think there are far worse things to fret about. I initially expected yet another of those t-shirt sites which are full of rape jokes etc, not a selection of t-shirts which are mostly pictures, and not pictures of rampant foaming cocks, either.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 05/03/2012 23:26

I think you might just have cracked it, SGB Grin

Dworkin · 05/03/2012 23:35

Yeah SGB let's make light of prostitutes! Saaavvvvy! Let's go back to the 80s!

What far worse things are there to fret about? The dishes not coming out clean from the dishwasher? Please elucidate SGB and it would be helpful if you could provide some examples when you make statements.

Apart from the name of the website, what disturbed me, as a radical feminist, was on one of the male teeshirts, was an image of a woman putting a bullet through the head of her male partner. No way would I allow my child to wear a tee shirt that promoted violence of any kind.

solidgoldbrass · 06/03/2012 00:39

Dworkin, the slogan We Are All Prostitutes was not intended to insult sex workers. It was 80s lefty-rebel-idealism, that we are all Slaves To The Man and sell our bodies to earn our keep. Etc. It may not be a sentiment that everyone agrees with but it isn't a woman-hating one.

ANd worse things to worry about than a few punky/stroppy t-shirts? Oh let's see, the attacks on reproductive rights, the resurgence of religions, institutionalised benefit-bashing, fucking Twilight being sold as a 'positive' image of loving relationships to young girls... where do you want to start?

TeiTetua · 06/03/2012 01:11

Using the word "whore" is yet another "mainstreaming of porn" reference--where what used to be obscene becomes just normal, or even fun to play with. But most of the clothes are made in men's and women's (they say "ladies") sizes, with the exception of the ones that have X's over the breasts. Those are for women only.

However, as porn goes, I suppose we have to agree that it's mild stuff.

Oops, I said "used to be obscene". Of course it's as obscene as it ever was, just not treated that way.

Oh dear.
