My aunt who is one of the closest people to me is gay and very intelligent, educated and arty. Anyway we were chatting and I asked her if she knew much about feminism, and would she like me to buy her some feminism poetry books. She has recently become a successful poet.

She looked at me smiling, told me she was an activist in the 70's and was involved back then.

Can't believe we never talked about it before- v interesting!

Basically it appears she was one of the people who campaigned for it when it first came aboutBlush and i was trying to tell her about it- as in I thought it would be something shed be interested in.

aah don't feel bad. It does show you know her well to have guessed she would be interested. I am assuming you were very young in the seventies too so how could you know.

She was probably thrilled to be asked what she did in "the war." It sounds like you are going to have some fantastic conversations with your aunt in the future. How exciting!

I don't think you made a dick of yourself - it is not as if your Aunt goes around wearing a T-shirt saying "I am a massive feminist".

She is probably delighted that she has a neice who shares smiliar interests. Anyway, how exciting for you that you have such an amazing Aunt.

TeiTetua · 04/12/2011 18:30

Speaking of female relatives, have you been teaching grandma to suck eggs? But Auntie is probably delighted that there's someone in the younger generation who's taking an interest.

buggyRunner · 04/12/2011 18:31

She's always been amazing in my eyes- I didn't think I could admire her anymore than I already do- I cant wait! She's just left to go travelling round India so it won't be for a while (she always travels for 3 months a year)

I completely agree with KRITIQ and everyone who's said no way have you made a dick of yourself - it sounds really exciting!
And I bet your DA doesn't think you've made a dick of yourself either. She's probably interested, delighted and intrigued, although probably not in the slightest surprised that her intelligent, adoring niece didn't just know that she knew all that stuff, IYSWIM - which says interesting things (good or bad, I dunno) about waves of feminism, different generations, what's got lost, what we take for granted, what we think we know.
Exciting, anyway - don't know if it's the Wine but your OP made me feel strangely happy, festive and optimistic Grin
