Mamma Mia was the only thing I ever sat through...I was told by a feminist lesbian who really should have known better, that it was a great feelgood film. A colleague also forced to experience the full horror described it as 'like being suffocated by a giant marshmallow'

It was the shock of how completely vacuous they were, and how millions of women look up to them as role models. (shudders)

I don't think it's so very depressing that millions of women have been to see the films - because the TV series were really quite good, even from a feminist angle. The TV programmes start off very strong and slide towards the mainstream as they move on, somehow morphing into the horror that is the films.

The films do depress me because they shit all over one of the few shoes in which women's conversations took precedence. But their roots are in a good place. I don't know if that is any sort of back stroke whatsoever!
