Making our Mark
An evening of discussion for feminist campaigners, grassroots activists and politicians
Thursday 15th Sept 2011, 6.00pm ? 8.30pm
Glasgow City Centre - venue to be confirmed
We are pleased to say that our speaker will be Gudrun Jonsdottir. Gudrun works with Stigamot, a leading Icelandic feminist organisation. She is the Icelandic national expert to the EWL Observatory on violence against women and Chairperson for the board of Skotturnar, an umbrella organisation for the Icelandic Women?s NGOs.
Stigamot is an education and counselling service for survivors of sexual abuse and violence. www.stigamot.is/index.php/english. Icelandic feminist groups have led successful campaigns on male violence, including on incest, prostitution, and other forms of sexual exploitation. Iceland is one of the few countries to bring in legislation against stripping and lap dancing - and possibly the only one to do so because of concerns about exploitation.
Gudrun will be sharing her experiences of developing campaigns in Iceland to legislate against violence and exploitation and on the impact these have had on attitudes towards women in Icelandic culture.
This event will be funded through the Ingrid McClements Memorial Award. www.womenssupportproject.co.uk/content/imma/181/
No charge for attendance - donations welcome.
If you would like to attend email [email protected] or call 0141 552 2221. We anticipate that there will be a lot of interest so please book your place soon.
