Why does this myth still exist that girls don't like sci fi? Why is there not more feminist slanted sci fi out there? And why are there no female gods in our culture? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

slug - are the Culture novels feministy scifi or just good scifi in general? I have one on my shelf waiting to be read.

Good SciFi, but because gender is a non-issue in the culture (they can change) there's some fairly strong femal characters (who may be male at some point in their lives)

Trillian - I haven't read more than about one Culture novel but it struck me as being good scifi in general, with strong female characters.

I'm going to head off to that exhibition next week, I think - can't wait!

Must read more of the Culture novels, someone just gave me the whole lot for my Kindle which I can't wait to get stuck intonGrin

I find that fantasy is a bit better for strong female characters than sci-fi, in general - no idea why that is, though? David Edding's books all have great, strong female characters (they were co-written by his wife which might go some way towards explaining that) but most of the sci-fi I've read, although they do have some OK female characters, just aren't that feministy. I must give some of the suggestions on this thread a go...

Stereotypically, fantasy is written by women and scifi by men, though obviously there are many exceptions either way. I think for sf with good female characters you often have to look towards specifically feminist sf. Again, exceptions apply - I find that John Wyndham is a lot better for good female characters & storylines than you'd expect.
