Why is it not ok for a man to call a woman "love"???

I have often wondered why women get offended when a man calls them "love", I remember as a child once a man did this to a woman who was holding a door for him, he just said "thanks love" and she turned round and said "im not your love" and stormed off!!!
I thought this was rude and offensive...Im from the north of England where it is a term of affection and I think it's lovely so why would anyone be offended by this???

I'm also from the North of England and I think it depends on the context. It isn't alright for someone to call you love if they are your boss, they are your customer (if you are a waitress for example) or if you are making a complaint. It is alright to call someone to call you love if you are their customer (they are the waitress for example) or they are holding a door for you, like in your example.

i always see it as the bloke assuming you will love him - merely for the fact he's male
