A friend linked on Facebook. Apparently she's in it! I think it's amazing and empowering. But some might feel uncomfortable that it was done by a man and wonder about his motives.

Your thoughts?

Well, it's the female form being depicted in a non-pornographic way, giving women an opportunity to see how different we all are. Which is not something we often get to see, since we're not as 'all out front' as men.

I like it. I think it's reassuring to women that there is huge variation but that we are all normal. Quite sad to see the before and after labiaplasty - there was nothing wrong with her cunt before the surgery.

i found the wall art fascinating, it made me feel part of the sisterhoood, in that we are all women yet so unique.

No I don't feel particularly 'empowered' (whatever that means) looking at it. I am aware vulvas are different, and that I have one, and that it will be different to others. Really doesn't make a difference to my life.

Dittany - I think some men might find 400 penises empowering, yes. If they were of lesser proportions and taken any sort of ridicule for their size. Perhaps seeing a wide range of penises would help him feel better and understand his place in life's spectrum.

And while I would agree with you about the vaginas terminology, I think it's because of Great Wall of China/Vagina rhymes. Sad, but there you go. I guess he felt it was catchy.

Anyway, my friend who took part in this is an amazing artist herself, and a very strong woman. So if she saw the virtue in this project, I guess that influences my opinion on it in a positive way.

Also, since men are so inordinately proud of their genitalia and are usually keen to show it off at the slightest provocation, it's good to see women proud their genitalia too. We are generally expected to be ashamed of it.

Yet more female nudes created by a man, how very very original. Yes, he might well have done better with 400 penises. That would actually be an innovation, but who'd ever want to see such dull things. Come to think of it, show the boys and girls together, and it might be OK.

But what's done is done. Has this casting process got enough definition to show hair? How many of them had it?

It does feel like a very male piece of art, all that symmetry and arranging vulvas in boxes (like the boxes that butterflies use to be pinned displayed in).
The idea of it being a collection, an ordering and more being better (quantity at the expense of what? humanity?) also feels very male.

Really not convinced about the whole concept.

even without the perviness, the fact that it's a male artist is key - even if it is 'empowering' it is a man 'empowering' the women rather than them doing it for themselves, which would undermine the whole empowering thing, wouldn't it?

being empowered has nothing to do with actual power that women are lacking. Empowerfulment (TM Twisty) is the consolation prize they offer women.

PS - I didn't look at the link. Call me a slacker but there is no way at all that I can imagine that it would be in the slightest 'empowering'.
