Sexist 'Jokes' in DM - my blood is literally boiling

I don't know if anyone else has seen this

Sexist 'Jokes'

Most of them are the same old tired sexist rubbish(and with a token 'jokes about men' bit so that they can't be accused of blatant sexism, but there is a Peter Kay joke about 6 men beating up his Mother-in-Law that literally has my blood boiling - I am so angry that they can publish this. I've been in two violent relationships myself, and to see violence towards women reduced to a cheap joke and sanctioned in a National newspaper makes me so beyond angry that I can't express it very well.

I've e-mailed them to complain and ask them to explain why they thought it was okay to publish it - will let you know what they say if they respond...

alemici - what on earth are you on? Confused

Oh yes, as long as both men and women are targets of sexism, it's absolutely fine, no trouble.

It's like saying it's fine that women are discouraged from becoming surgeons, because after all men are discouraged from becoming nurses ... stupid.

ves

I think you might find this interesting

A Christmas card has been withdrawn from two Tesco stores in York after complaints that it makes fun of children with ginger hair.

The card shows a child with ginger hair sitting on the lap of Santa Claus, and the words: "Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones."

And quite right too omg.

I don't think that the history and current situation with people with red hair is on a par with the history and current situation for black people though is it?

This isn't a competition anyway, my point was that society sees a difference between jokes about different groups of people, which is interesting in itself. Some people are seen as "fair game" and others not.

Some people on this thread are questioning whether women are "fair game", given the position of women. I would suspect that these same people would generally be against jokes which take the piss out of ginger people or welsh people as well.

I honestly don't care that much. its only words. People are dying of starvation etc.

Cloudbase · 12/03/2011 16:24

To be honest, what specifically upset me wasn't the general sexist jokes, which are pretty lame, but the Peter Kay joke about 6 men beating up his MIL.

I get where the joke is (iyswim),I just don't see that it's in any way funny. It's about 6 men beating up a woman. Sorry, but how is that not offensive to women?

Thought it was quite funny myself...

Cloudbase · 12/03/2011 16:37

Out of interest, why?
