I completed a Sociology degree in 2009 and then had DD2, am now considering an MA with the OU but not completely sure if I have time right now. Am doing a (very) little reading, researching etc. DH has joint custody with ex-W with agreement that she has main residency until DSS can make own decisions, hence my interest in this area.

Why can't men like Joeking understand that to be a feminist does not automatically make a man-hater? To show compassion for victims of rape/DV does not demonise all men? Is it a lack of education and what role do the women in these men's lives play?

Ahhhh. Thought it had. :)

HerBeX · 02/03/2011 22:04

I think it's projection NotaNaturalGeordie.

These men really really hate women, pathologically.

So they assume that we hate them.

Was it Gandhi who said that the tragedy of a liar isn't that no-one believes him, but that he can believe no-one else? I think this is a similar phenomenon. They simply can't imagine that women want justice and to stop men's privilege, without assuming that means we hate me.

HerBeX · 02/03/2011 22:05

Missed out the last n. That changes the sense of the sentence somewhat. Grin

I had a little read around that site. It's funny (but sad) that they pour all this scorn and derision onto feminists, but their complaints about women that they meet in their lives are the same ones we all pull women up on here! You know, the "all men are like that" type stuff. It is no surprise that libertarianism is mentioned often, though....

I understand (partly) why feminists get called man-haters if it's not understood that "men" is men as a group. But a cursory glance on this board and, say, AIBU, would show that we are not the ones who are making offensive generalisations.

NotANaturalGeordie · 02/03/2011 22:14

Thank you, you are all very friendly in here. Sorry I can't make the march this weekend (didn't know about it before and too short notice), so I will keep lurking! Off to bed now, I will be back.

smugaboo · 03/03/2011 03:59

Oh bum, I had planned to go on that thread and make the following ( v. witty) comment;

"I haven't read the thread but I hear that there is a recruitment drive going on here for the Sisterhood of Sin. How do I sign up?

"

Brilliance wasted. Again. Must move to northern hemisphere.

Hey AyeRobot, I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. The "all men are bastards" stuff is never found on the feminist board.

Blackduck · 03/03/2011 06:52

Did he get banned though - he should have as it clearly was the same person who has been banned 0nce (twice? three? times) already? He can change his name but the posting style is so crass obvious and his 'threat' re sponsers he actually mentions on their board (which I really wish I hadn't read...)

I don't think MN is man hating.

But I believe there seems to be a level of contempt aimed at Men as a group. And that women are given the benefit of the doubt on threads. Unless it's a MIL or step-mother one.

But as this is a forum populated about 99% (link please!) by women I don't think that is surprising.

I think the MRA see men and think man.

I agree with Engelbert - often you see comments like "Oh well, men are just like that" in response to some minor issue (not so much rape and DV though, I hope?) on AIBU or chat or, say, parenting, e.g. in a discussion about whether dads get involved with childcare. Usually there will be some dissenting voices though.

But generally on the relationships board (except possibly the cheating threads, though I don't go on them much) and the feminist board, at least, those kind of assumptions never go unchallenged.

amiheartless · 03/03/2011 14:53

The thread is gone,

read the MRA thread, pretty trollish shiz

however, wtf 'how many women have you raped?

thats like asking someone if their a paedophile, a volatile response to a volatile poster.
sorry I digressed.

what did the MRA nutjob say? what was the thread about??

I can agree with the poster being truly awful but still Hmm

HerBeX · 03/03/2011 18:09

No the how many women have you raped was in response to a slur accusing someone of murder, from what I remember.

Or some such.

It was said in order to demonstrate how offensive his remark was, because if it's an offensive thing to be called a rapist, how much more offensive is it to be called a murderer.

(Caveat: it may not have been murderer. But it was something that carries a heavier sentence than rape.)

HerBeX · 03/03/2011 18:11

But he doesn't explain that bit, does he?

Probably because he didn't actually understand it tbh. One of the things about all these MRA trolls, is that they really are not very bright, that comes across really clearly. All of us are so much cleverer than them and they are too stupid to actually be able to spot that and we are too polite and modest to mention it.

Except me.

Grin

To be serious for a moment, they don't actually understand our arguments. Because they are coming from such a blinkered and stupid place.

ButterflyAnn · 03/03/2011 23:29

[shock} WOW Shock

AS IF a site like that exists??? WTF??????

All the more reason to be a feminist!!

I think the rape comment was in response to the lynching comment wasn't it? Which he then went on to deny .... yes, the patronising 'ask an adult' and all that. AHHH!
