was just reading an article about "anti-feminist meeting" in Switzerland here and stumbled on this historical poster gallery about why women should not get the right to vote here. Apparently they would neglect their child-rearing duties then. quite fascinating.

Do you know any similar pages? Would be interesting to remind ourselves how things were not so long ago..

Mind you, by that time, women in their nearest neighbour, NZ, had been voting for a decade.

once you start surfing for something, you find the most amazing things. like:

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.nebraskastudies.org/0700/frameset_reset.html?www.nebraskastudies.org/0700/stories/0701_0112.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ten Reasons Why The Great Majority of Women Do Not Want the Ballot

or this is just hilarious: jwa.org/teach/primarysources/orgrec_08_detail.html
3 pages of tips to housewives how to remove spots and scrub sinks and then on page 4, why they don't need to vote..

and oh the poor husband..www.johndclare.net/images/Women_SuffragetteHome.jpg

Reading those reasons for denying the vote to women leaves me with the impression that anti-feminist reasoning has a very long history but has failed to improve the quality of its arguments, which were pathetically weak from the start.

ullainga · 03/11/2010 12:15

from one pamphlet:

Why vote for pure food laws, when your husband does that, while you can purify your Ice-box with saleratus water?

You do not need a ballot to clean out your sink spout.

Hmm

"BECAUSE 80% of the women eligible to vote are married and can only double or annul their husband?s votes."

Do you think they realised this makes NO sense whatsoever as an argument?

"BECAUSE in some States more voting women than voting men will place the Government under petticoat rule."

Oh no! Don't let women vote! Because if you let women vote, that might, just might have the unexpected result of affecting who gets elected.

That pamphlet is really shocking. Giving women the vote might result in evil occuring???

Pootles2010 · 04/11/2010 16:25

Found first link really interesting, especially where he's discussing their 'key beliefs'. He says they oppose 'the feminist hatred of men'. I'm still trying to get my head around what feminism is, but it seems to me we're fighting for some of the same things bizzarely enough, for example not presuming women to be the best caregivers, and 'looking at the individual and not judging by gender'.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense or typos, have sleeping baby on lap!

ullainga · 04/11/2010 18:00

No Pootles that makes perfect sense and this is what I have mentioned earlier in this thread as well - as their children are concerned, men generally have far more rights in more equal (feminist) countries than in more "traditional" ones where the only job for dad is to bring home the bacon.
Yes, this has been one of the aims of feminism, to fight those silly gender stereotypes, like that dads are not really important or able to take care of their kids. So the argument that evil feminists are keeping dads from seeing their children is just ignorant.

That Menarebetterthanwomen site is hilarious. Dick Masterson indeed!

It was only in 1965 that the Federal government in the US took steps (via the Voting Rights Act) to assert the principle that black people had the right to vote in every state of the US.
