Mirena Coil Experiences

I had a Mirena coil fitted a couple of weeks ago and would be interested to know the bleeding pattern others have experienced. So far I have had random small amounts of blood for two weeks and now having a period. The period is the same as it would’ve been previously with no coil.
I was hoping to have less or no periods as this is seen as one of the advantages of this coil.
So do I just need to be patient or is it common to still have periods?

I had small amounts of bleeding for about 5 months. Never a full period. Now get some spotting occasionally but nothing more.

2 weeks is no time, surely they told you it would be at least 6 months for them to settle into their new pattern? It took over a year for my periods to stop but I haven't had regular periods for around 6 years now

I wasn’t told anything about 6 months, but beside the point as I was asking for people’s experiences.

Watching with interest. I'm 3 months in and like you so far have had normal (heavy) periods but they've been a bit late and then spotting which feels like it's lasted for 2 weeks of each month! Hoping it will settle soon as I'm getting a bit fed up.

Had mine fitted in January this year. I was told it could take 3-6 months for my cycle to settle.

I bled a lot for the first four months, heavily for most of the time. Just as I was starting to despair, it stopped. Since then I have had one lightish proper period and some intermittent bouts of light spotting. These sometimes last a day or two and sometimes go on for a week or so. They are very irregular and unpredictable - for instance I was spotting every few days throughout September but then nothing this month until today. But it is very light so manageable.

I was hoping it would be a bit calmer and easier than it is, but my periods were really horrendously heavy and long-lasting before so this is still vastly preferable. I'm tracking it closely.

Mine stopped flooding and clots but didn’t reduce the overall amount of bleeding. In fact it got worse, once it settled down at month 3 or 4 it was 14 days out of every 28. Now it’s about three weeks out of every four and I’m having to go and get it out and have further checks.

Really wish I hadn’t bothered with it

mommybear1 · 23/10/2026 21:24

I had a very painful heavy period in the first week after fitting and then again the following month the next month it tailed off to a very light bleed they also said 6 months to settle to me - tbf that has been my experience I still get some stomach pains and some spotting but that’s it no more excruciating pain or heavy bleeding. I’m just a year in now and really happy with how it’s worked.

ItalianChips · 23/10/2026 21:26

I had random light bleeding for about 12 weeks and then nothing. It’s been a year, only side effect I get is that I get more spots on my face, but is worth it for the other benefits.

Fizbosshoes · 23/10/2026 21:29

I had bleeding every day for a month, but not heavy.
After about 3 months no bleeding at all, and for me its been brilliant. Ive had it 3 years

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/10/2026 21:32

I had spotting on and off for a couple of months - annoying more than anything. I was also told it could be up to six months to fully settle. I still get random “periods” but very, very light, I assume it’s breakthrough bleeding.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 23/10/2026 21:35

I had c good couple/3 months of bleeding but then after that barely anything if anything at all each month, to the point I have no idea if/when my periods stopped.

i now use it for HRT.

Wonderinwanderer · 23/10/2026 21:36

Im thinking of getting mine taken out as before I had light, very predictable periods and now i have what feels like continuous light spotting. I don't like not having a cycle I cam actually track. I feel weirdly cut off from my own body, its hard to explain

rollerblind · 23/10/2026 21:39

I’m on my second one. No period. No problems. Very occasional spotting.

B0bbingalong · 23/10/2026 21:43

Very frequent light spotting which has stopped over the last few months. I've had it in 18 months!

fantasticoplastico · 23/10/2026 22:03

I had mine fitted about March/april time and I’m still having (lighter) periods and a little period pain. I found it really uncomfortable for the first month

Purplerain1144 · 23/10/2026 22:17

I have had mine 3 years. Had almost daily spotting for 4 months then had very light sporting once every 6 months and now I get a very light period every 28 days. Previously had very heavy period which were very irregular cycles. Overall happy with it as at least its predictable and not making me anaemic!
