Sleep amount and quality in your forties

I posted earlier this morning as I’m having sleep issues associated with my cycle - that’s led me to think about another question! Those of you in your forties or those who remember this phase- how many hours sleep do you get a night and have you noticed changes in your forties? Any tips also welcome! x

I’d say you’re probably perimenopausal. You should still get c8 hours. You might want to consider HRT. It’s helped me sleep a lot better.

I probably get about 6-7 hours and it’s not enough. I need at least 8 to feel rested. I’m 44 and in peri meno but GP won’t even consider HRT until I’m 45. Drives me nuts.

My sleep in my 40s was better than my sleep at nearly age 60 and not as good as my sleep when I was 20-something. There was no sharp change at any age except when I started having babies. I don't remember any correlation with my cycle at any age.

Having babies (age early30s-40) fucked up my sleep. I had to learn to be awake no matter how awful I felt. Having several babies reinforced the habit and I became increasingly poor sleeper over time.

The trend towards being wakeful continued on a steady increase ever since.

So yeah now I'm in menopause and my sleep is awful, but I would be an idiot to blame awful sleep simply on menopause.

Magnesium in the morning really helps my sleep but if I take it too late it disturbs my sleep, I don’t know why.

the one thing i would recommend is really good earplugs and eye mask. I was getting disturbed by dh who is a light sleeper, and by his breathing and snuffling. I decided to try them and now I sleep so much better. I use them even if I’m sleeping alone now.
