Mirena coil after a year: keep it in or have it removed?

Hello,

I’m unsure as to what to do regarding the Mirena coil. I had it fitted a year ago for heavy periods and low iron, and initially for the first 3 months I bled or spotted almost continually. Things have gradually improved but I’ve had it just over a year and I’m still having very regular periods with spotting and bleeding lasting up to 10 days a month. Periods are lighter but not as light as I would have expected! Ultrasound has ruled out any underlying cause of bleeding.

I’m in my late 30s, and currently not experiencing perimenopausal symptoms yet. I don’t know enough about how the coil is used for HRT further down the line, but I’m unsure whether it’s worth keeping the coil in if I may need it further down the line, or have it out. My question is really risks v benefits of keeping it in and having it potentially in for years if I decide to use HRT in the future. I’m also interested to see if people who had heavy periods before perimenopause were more prone to heavy bleeding/flooding in perimenopause?

Thanks!

Have they investigated if there's an underlying cause of the heavy bleeding e.g. fibroids? I had a mirena to supposedly help with heavy bleeding even though I had a diagnosis of fibroids and it actually made the bleeding worse to the point it bled itself out! Haven't had any serious issues since having the fibroids treated and bleeding in peri-menopause has been lighter than I've ever had in my life.

Thanks for your reply; I am glad your treatment was successful. Yes, I've had an ultrasound and there was no evidence of fibroids.

Hi op. I was the same as you though I had one inserted for HRT purposes. But I've carried on having periods though they have got much lighter.

In the end they did a hysteroscopy D&C and scraped out out the endometrium. So now I have periods (cramping mood swings) but hardly any blood.

Its been a godsend with my HRT and I couldn't tolerate oral or vaginal progesterone so this was perfect.

I'd stick with it.

Thank you- glad it’s been the right decision.

I have one and its taken 2-3 years for my periods to get lighter. most months I have no bleeding now or just very light spotting. worth sticking with it.

That’s interesting; gives me hope that it might be worth sticking with it for now.

For me personally, the contraceptive benefit has been good
